Tuesday, March 25, the game was at home against the Layton Christian Eagles. The Cats had a slow start, as they were down 4 to 2 at the end of the second inning, and 10 to 6 after the third. But the team rallied, scoring 8 runs in the fifth to take a 15 to 12 lead and come out with the win. Porter Santos had a spectacular home run to help the Cats be victorious. Thursday, March 27, they moved on to take on our rivals, the North Summit Braves, here at South Summit. The team started off very well scoring 7 runs to zero for the Braves by the end of the 2nd inning. Despite the Braves rallying to get back in the game, the Cats held on to a solid 3 point lead winning the game 10 to 7. Dax Wilmouth and Riley Allen each smacked a double to help push the Cats to victory. The Cats are now undefeated in region. Their next game will be against the Rowland Hall Winged Lions. Go, Cats! APRIL 6, 2012 Wildcat Track and Field teams are looking great SCOTT NAGLE, SCNEWS The South Summit Track Team has started the 2012 season with some impressive performances. It is one of the largest track teams the Wildcats have fielded with 54 participants in many years. They have already participated in five track meets so far, traveling to Kearns, North Sevier, Delta, and twice at North Summit. Made up mostly of freshmen and sophomores, with a mixture of juniors and seniors, on May 16, the Wildcats ran in the Kearns Relays. With most of the relay teams being inexperienced, they showed that teamwork and speed can overcome that deficit. The girls 4x100 relay team made up of all freshmen (Jensen Meyers, Melissa Sorenson, Giovanna Shannon, and Sierra Davis) placed first out of 9 teams, mostly 3A and 4A teams. The 4x200 team, made up of the same young ladies also placed 3rd overall. The Co-ed Medley team (JC Walsh, Trystan Harnden, Jensen Meyers, and Giovanna Shannon) placed 4th overall. The boys 4x100 relay team (Ty Jones, Jacobie Large, Luke Siddoway, and JC Walsh) placed 4th. The boys 4x200 team (Bryce Jensen, Ty Jones, Luke Siddoway, and JC Walsh) placed 4th. Finally, the boys sprint medley team (Trysten Hamden, Ty Jones, Jacobie Large, Ray Leavitt) placed 5th overall. At the Matt Burr Invitational in North Sevier, the Wildcats faced 15 other teams made up mostly of 2A and 1A schools. Some of the outstanding individual performances turned in were Madysin Leavitt running a 19.31 in the 100 hurdles, Sierra Davis running a 14.26 in 100 meters, Kendyl Pollard running a 6:44 in the 1600 meters, Charlotte Peterson running a 72.45 in the 400 meters, Charlee Mondragon throw- South Summit Soccer STUDENT WRITER: BRAXTON FARMER This last week South Summit played Wendover and Waterford. In the Wendover game, the Varsity lost 3-1 as the the team wasn't playing their best. Brett Weller was able to score a goaloff of a flip throw. In this game Keeper Tony Go- stick saved 33 shots on goal in the first half, which made it 00 in the first half. The Waterford game on March 30, 2012, was a better game for South Summit. They played well, but still lost 2-1. Brett Weller again scored our only goal. This time he was able float one over the goalie and in. They had four games, which was nice because they don't get have many games. This is because not every team the Cats play has a JV squad. Their first double header was against St. Joe on Tuesday, March 28. St. Joe is a new team to softball, and so it was a nice chance for them to get in a few games. The Wildcats hit really well and played solid defense for both of the games. For their STUDENT WRITER: TAYLOR ROSS LARSEN Being a part of the South Summit Drama team for four years, and after competing at region and state all four years, I have never had as much fun as I did last Thursday, March 29, at Region Drama hosted by Karl Maeser Preparatory Academy. For many who don't know how it's even possible to compete in a club like drama, let me explain. First, the one acts. Each school in the 2A Division is to pick a one act (a short play that cannot exceed an hour), and after weeks of preparation for this play, we take it to region. There we perform the one act in front of various judges and the other schools. You think performing in front of your parents is hard?!? Try doing it in front of the competition, and judges who have been in theater all their lives. Once we were judged by an Off-Broadway actor, whom had been on Broadway for over twenty years! And this year, a casting talent scout from Laksa movie studios apparently came to judge! Anyways, I got off track, after performing, the judges critique us and tear us apart! Its quite intimidating actually, and you begin to doubt your God-given talents and question your very need for EXISTENCE! As you can see, I'm still recuperating from all this drama... well, once the critiquing is over, we do Individual Events, that include: monologues, scenes, musical theater, pantomime, etc. There are then three rounds of the IE events where each performance misjudged by a different judge. The competition rounds are followed by the awards assembly, and the bus ride home. This year, the bus ride home was victorious! EVERY actor from the South Summit club qualified for state! Ashlee Marie Page was awarded BEST Actress Over- All for one act, Taylor Ross Larsen was awarded BEST Supporting Actor Over-all in one act, and Rebekah Gerlach received BEST Character Actress. As for the IE events, Ashlee Page and myself earned third place in musical theater, Ashlee also finished third place in dramatic monologue. Rebekah Gerlach placed second place in dramatic monologue, and Courtney Hawkins and Grace Schulz finished fourth place in a scene from The Importance of Being Earnest. Overall South Summit placed third, and our one act won second place, and was awarded best scenery and makeup! What more needs to be said?!?! Nothing really. Good luck at State you dramatic Thespians! Go Classifieds 783-1471 next doubleheader they played Union the next day on Wednesday. They lost their first game, but then the pulled out a win right after. All and all the girls played excellent softball and it was great they got to play all those games! The JV is shaping up to be quite the team and they are constantly pushing the Varsity to do better and work hard to keep their spots. Great things will come from these ladies, and the softball program is looking better and better each year. Keep working hard girls and go get 'em! Track+ Field+ HardWork = Success STUDENT WRITER: BAILEY HOWARD Lights, Stage makeup...and drama! 2:13 in the 800 meters, Matana Meyers throwing a personal best 63-02 in the discus, and Zyler Tilleman throwing a season best 70-04 in the discus. The relay teams also showed their mettle with the girls 4x100 (Madysin Leavitt, Erika Hansen, Melissa Sorenson, Sierra Davis) placing 8th out of 23 teams, the girls sprint medley (Charlotte Peterson, Kendyl Pollard, Melissa, Sierra) placed 8th overall, the boys 4x100 (Jay Reidhead, Nick Vidrine, Keyton Gines, JC Walsh) placed 4th out 24 teams overall and the boys sprint medley (Ty Jones, JC Walsh, Dax Wilmoth, McKay DeGering) placed 5th out of 16 teams with a season best 4:08. Many of the athletes have already qualified for the BYU Invitational on May 4-5 and the boys 4x100 team has already qualified for the state meet on May 18-19. The Wildcats next meet is this Saturday at the UVU invitational. Go, Wildcats! South Summit Middle School fifth grader Chandler Ries recently competed in the Freestyle Junior Nationals held in Steamboat Colorado. It is the top kids in the country that qualify for the event throughout the winter, ranging in ages from 7-18. Chandler took first, in both Slope Style and Half Pipe, in her age group, 9-10 year old girls, as well as placing 9th overall in Slope Style. Chandler is the daughter of Greg and Ginger Ries. When asked how he felt about the brand new track season of 2012, South Summit Coach Aaron Tillet stated, "I think it's all right." He went on to explain that this year they have a very young team, but that this young team has great potential. This team, comprised of mainly freshmen and sophomores, is off to a great start even though most of them are still trying all of the different events. However, the set boys and girls relay teams are starting really well, and competed against seniors and junior relay teams at Delta. "Everyone is beating their personal bests every time," Coach Tillet surmised. We congratulate all the members of the track and field team for putting themselves out there to compete in this individual and team sport. We would also like to thank the coaches this year: Coach Aaron Tillet, Coach Liz Snyder, Coach Nagle, Coach Vernon, and assistants Sara Lambert and Matt Anderson. Good luck, Cats!
