The crowd gathered around the pool dressed in their "unique" costume attire ready for the Polar Plunge for the Special Olympics! The Summit County Sheriff's Department coordinated the "Polar Plunge" under direction of Andrew Wright of the SCSO. The "Law Guardians of the Special Olympic Torch" is law enforcement - and SCSO and other law enforcement agencies and friends and students were represented to fulfill this role. The "Chief of Police of Park City" - Wade Carpenter and "Park City Fire Chief" - Paul Hewitt - were finishing up the final tally results with a competition to see who could raise the most money through each department on Friday. As a result of a "win for the PCPD" Chief Carpenter was privileged to "dress" Chief Hewitt at the Polar Plunge, and wear the attire which he was adorned with that day! The PCPD stickers on his chest identified him as the "low fundraiser" - and he had to remove his warm fire suit to jump into the pool! Other law enforcement agencies, such as the Summit County Sheriff's Office, were represented and "Chaplin" Chantel Dailey "plunged" in wearing her wig and robes and a wooden cross, along with other members of the department, also dressed up! There were dispatchers, "Wade's Angels" of the PCPD, and "The Angels" - the winners of the "Group: Costume" - PCPD others dressed in their favorite character outfit or just "clowning" around who took the plunge! Teens, school kids, and other "misfit" and fun outfits could be seen taking turns "plunging" for a great cause - to raise money for the Special Olympic Athletes - each of those present and participated in the plunge were wearing a unique outfit and / or costume! Cory the Clown - volunteered to do face-painting and blowup balloon characters for kids - and Bonita Hutchison, Special Olympics Director, was pleased with the out-pouring of generosity of funds to help this program along. Friends (and fellow plumbers) of one of the lawmen got more plumbers to fully attire themselves with "plunging" outfits to jump into the pool with - and they raised the most money as a group! Sponsors such as Mike Hale Chevrolet, Jupiter Bowl, and Wasatch Bagel (furnishing food for the crowd) were also represented and thanked for their donations. Making a grand total of over ten thousand dollars to go towards the Special Olympics made it all worth the "cold and shivering Polar Plunge"! Statewide - over $200 thousand was raised for this cause! Her story of how it "all came down" to leading a full and successful career now moving forward with confidence was told to the North Summit and Morgan High Schools' Sterling Scholars at a Recognition Banquet hosted by Holcim, (US) Inc. The evening of March 29th Sterling Scholar Nominees from these two schools came with their parents to enjoy dinner with their families at Larry's Chicken Inn in Morgan. Welcomed by Holcim Plant Manager Keith Krugh, Sterling Scholar Nominees were honored for their dedication to learning and "celebrate ac- ademics". Krugh mentioned that growing up in a small town of about 5,000, it seemed to him that those who excelled academically were not recognized as often as the athletes. (They also deserved recognition...don't get me wrong), but It is important for you to know that "...this night is for all of you - and you are recognized by (your) teachers. Enjoy this night...feel good about yourself." He then introduced Kevin Ovard, Holcim (US) Inc.'s Environmental Manager. Kevin, Melissa's father, is not only proud of his daughter's accomplishments, but encouraged her to make her own decisions -and then turned the time over to her to share her story with those present.
