Foley, - YORK Almost of the nation's three million college coeds who have registered to vote in the presidential election this fall have not yet made up their minds NEW one-thir- d on how to cast their ballots, the College Poll reveals. Although Sen. George McGovern appears to have a substantial lead generally on the campus, this one million uncommitted votes could be crucial in a close election. The following question was asked last week of t54 coeds on over 60 campuser, repreof the senting a nations colleges and universities. McGovern's popularity with the campus coeds has decreased slightly since the Democratic convention. On- the other hand, the results further indicate that President Nixons own popularity has not increased because of the shift in student preferences. The major significance is the increase of the undecided vote which went from 25 percent to 31 percent since August of this year. The key Issue among the coeds is the Vietnam War and more particularly, the bombing. I really See Page 22, Column 1 Confirm Independence other College Poll studies conducted over the past four years, the current survey confirms the tendency of the average coed to be independent politically. However, those who indicated a party preference voted the Democratic party 2 to 1. Neither candidate scored high personally on the highly favorable list with the college coeds. President Nixon has created little traditionally campus enthusiasm. However, when coeds were asked to rate Sen. McGovern only 11 percent voted highly favorable. The survey further indicates As with . womens that the lib has little impact on the campus. While most college coeds would endorse abortion laws throughout the country, they identify closely with their male classmates on most issues. Willing to Participate Although coed students do not wish to be identified with parties generally, they are anxious and willing to participate in campaign politics, the survey shows. Even among those who have not yet registered, 80 percent intend to register before the election. Only 3 percent of the coeds indicate that they do not intend to vote.
