War's Toll in 1942 mtttmtttmtftttt PROVO TOTAH) SUNTJAY HEHAIT5, ' 'SUNDAY, -MARCIi T?; T333 f, Officers Work on 'Hermit' Mystery SALT LAKE CITY, March 12 U.R Colorado officers today were taking: fingerprints to establish definitely the identity of wandering- "hermit" believrd to t Donald Matheson of Beaver, Utah, in the hope of clearing up a 20-year-old mystery. The hermit, who said his name was L'onald Matheson, 51, was takrn into custody yesterday by Trinidad, Colo., police because they feared he might die of exposure. ex-posure. He had a long flowing beard and hair, was shabbily dressed, and officers discovered he rad been living in the open sleeping wherever he could find, a rude shelter in crevices, abandoned aban-doned shacks or under bridges. Utah relatives reported the Donald Matheson from Beaver was drafted into the army in 1918, and was later reported wounded in action. This was the iast heard of him until the Trinidad Trini-dad man said he was the long-missing long-missing Matheson. During the years since ner son disappeared, Mrs. Caroline Matheson-, mother of tre missing soldier, died. S. seminary, under Principal Le-Roy Le-Roy Whitehead, is bringing letters let-ters -from rim in the armed service serv-ice from the far corners of the globe. Letters received the past week came from Australia, North Africa, Hawaiian Islands, Somewhere Some-where in the Pacific, Drew Field, Florida; The Pacific Fleet; U. S. S. Submarine Service; Camp Koh-ler Koh-ler and many other places. The Seminary students recently sent out letter No. 5 and this maks a total of nearly 1.50O sheets. Four hundred and twenty-five letters were sent in this group. More than 235 of the men in the service have sent letters to the students thanking them. Nationwide plans for the celebration cele-bration include the opening of a campaign to enlist more adult voluteer leaders, in which the Provo Girl Scout council is making mak-ing plans to take part. Girl Scout leaders believe they can do a real war-time job for the country by opening Girl Scout training to even more girls than are now enrolled. The council is looking for women over JJl to give about two hous a week of their time as leaders of Girl Scout troops. The coujncil will give these women help and training for their jobs, with suggestions on how to start and keep going with interesting activities. The waiting list of scouting grows larger each day- The leadership drive, is a tre-i mendous opportunity- for any woman. Her service to the nation.! will be multiplied and will not end when the war ends. The attitudes at-titudes and knowledge that Girl Scous learn in scouting today can influence the whole future of , America. Army Physician Visits Family In Spanish Fork SPANISH FORK Captain Mark J. Brockbank, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Archie Brockbank of this city .spent a few days of the Week here on furlough. He was-enroute was-enroute to Camp Adair, Oregon, where he has received a new assignment as-signment with the army medical corps. Captain Brockbank has spent the last two months at the Northwestern University medical school, where he has received special spec-ial instruction in bone end joint surgery as applicable to war wounds. This course was given under the auspices of the medical department of the army. Enroute to Camp Adair he was granted a three-day delay in order that hr might visit here with his family, and at Price with Dr. J. C. Hubbard, Hub-bard, with whom he worked prior to entering the service. Captain Brockbank has been in the army medical corps the past two years. CARD OF THANKS The family of Charles O.
