Show twelve weeks ago today to day we recorded the death of sister margaret J hoagland Hoaglan dg wife of bishop abraham hoagland of the tho ward of this thia city today to day thursday feb 1872 it becomes our duty to chronicle his hib demise BISHOP abraham hoahland Ho AaLAND laland died of pneumonia at yesterday evening his health had not been bean as good as usual for two iwo or three weeks back but he continued to attend to his bih duties with his accustomed prompt itada until wednesday the ath dinst when he was compelled to retire to bed tho attack was a very severe one and everything that faith skill and good nursing could do forham fon for him was done but death triumphed he retained his consciousness almost jo to the time of his departure even after his sight eight had haa failed and he was too weak to speak when asked if anything could be done dome for him he comprehended the question and shook his head when he pas passed sed bed away it was as though he had fallen asleep so gently and calmly did his spirit take its ith departure the deceased decess ed was born march 1797 in the town of hillsborough somerset county new jersey had he lived until dext dest march to te would have been 75 years old in the year 1825 he left his native state and went to michigan where he bought a farm in the town ot or royal oak oakland county he afterwards returned to new jersey married and returned to royal oak at which place he continued to reside until he emigrated to nauvoo the subject of religion early occupied hia his atten tion and he earnestly sought the lord to reveal to him the truth at the timo time the jhb elders of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints visited his neighborhood he was a deacon in the congregational church zealously striving to keep the commandments of the lorato Lord tot toJ to the beat of his knowledge when he hoard heard the falness of the gospel he felt that there was truth which ho he had not obeyed and he determined to embrace it whatever the consequences might be and from the day of hla his baptism up to the last moment of his life he never wavered nor had any other feeling fooling than one of rejoicing at the thought that he was counted worthy to be a member of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints he was baptized march slat 1811 by elder asaph blanclard ar d was ordained a teacher in the spring of 1843 he be moved to nauvoo and was ordained an elder under the hands of the prophet joseph smith at winter quarters by direction of president brigham young young ho he was ordained a bishop under the hands of elders orson pratt and wit wll ford woodruff in 1847 he moved to this valley where he has resided ever since when the people moved out ot of the fort forta sand ana and wards were organ organized laed he was chosen counselor to bishop john murdock of the ward the latter was selected as a missionary sio islo nary and left for australia early in the spring of 1851 1831 from that time bishop hoagland Hoa giand gland has acted as bishop in that ward enjoying to a remarkable extent the love and confidence of the people eople to whom he has been a kind and affectionate father and who have revered him as such while he will DO loe greatly missed by his family and friends it is no cause of heartrending grief for a faithful man ripe in years la in the falness of his honors in the possession of his office and the love of the people to pass away it is thus that bishop hoagland has departed and thus he wished to depart dopart discharging the duties of his office almost to the last day dav of his life the funeral will take place at half past nine on saturday mornin morning at the ward assembly rooms booms friends are respectfully invited to attend |
