Show MILLERS FUNERAL The Ceremonies in the Supreme Court Room HIS GREATEST CHARACTERISTIC Was His Manliness He was to Reconstruction Reconstruc-tion Times What Marshall was to the Formative Period WASHINGTON Oct 16The funeral services ser-vices over the remains of the late Justice Miller took place this afternoon in the supremo court chamber The remains escorted by the justices President and members of the cabinet and family and a few intimate friends of the deceased were taken to the capitol and the casket placed in the center of tho space m front of the bench upon which Justice Miller sat so many years The chair of the dead justice was draped in black and flowers brought by friends and associates were placed along the railing near the bench The President sent a handsome design of crossed swords encircled by a wreath Seats were reserved re-served for the family justices President and members of his cabinet and attorneys practicing before the court The President and Mrs Harrison sent 0 beautiful design consisting of two crossed swords in white cosmos flowers encircled by a wreath of lilies of tho valley roses and purple orchids The card attached to them was inscribed With the deep and sincere sympathy of President and Mrs Harrison Mrs Harrison also sent a floral anchor Resting against the supremo court bench immediately in front or the casket was a large open book in immortelles on a band of ferns with the inscription The loving remembrance of the lady managers man-agers or the Garfield hospital of which the dead man was a warm friend and patron There were also floral tributes from the law school of the National uni veasity of which Justice Miller for many years has been chancellor from Secretary Secre-tary Noble Chief Justice Fuller and a number of other friends The President was accompanied by Mrs Harrison and by Secretary and Mrs Blaine Secretary and Miss Windom Secretary Tracy and Mrs Noble Attorney General and Mrs Miller Secretary and Mrs Rusk and Pri vato Secretary Halford Others in the court room were exAttorney General Garland Gar-land Senators Manderson and Paddock Solicitor General Taft Assistant Attorney General Maury Chief Justice Bermudez of Louisiana and Judge Sidney Dillon A few minutes after the arrival of the President the funeral cortege arrived at the capitol from the residence of the late justice The funeral procession was headed by two officiating clergymen and entered the capitol by the east entrance and proceeded to the courtroom through the main door the justices of the court and Justice Strong who is on tho retired list followed the clergymen and seated themselves on the left of the casket which was borne by the active pallbearers The family a few moments mo-ments later passed in Mrs Miller was supported to a chair at the right of the coffin by her daughter Irene Miller Mrs Touselean and Miss Corkhill daughter and granddaughter of Justice Miller were immediately behind them and with Mrs Reeves and Mr and Mrs Adams were seated in the first row to the right of the casket Tho other members of the funeral party consisted of Mr and Mrs Lewis Davis Mrs McKenny Miss Perry and Miss Kate Perry Mr and Mrs Thomas Wilson Mrs Paige Mr James and Mr Wood of Omaha and the ladies of the families of the supreme court justices justi-ces Services were opened with the singing of the hymn Abide with me by a quartette of male voices Rev Dr Shippen of the Unitarian church then read the burial retual The quartette sang Come unto me and the simple services were closed with short addresses ad-dresses by Rev D Bartlett of tho New York Avenue Presbyterian church and a benediction Dr Bartlett sketched the life and character char-acter of the man and dwelling particularly upon the great service he had rendered to the cause of freedom to all men In the work of readjustment Justice Miller bore the part Justice Marshall bore in early days In casting about for a suitable phrase to appropriately describe the man Dr Bartlett said he had selected this A great American man Manhood was his quality above all others Ho was labled all over with qualities of his cocntry and his people The heads of all present were then bowed for a moment while Dr bhippen prayed God to comfort those who have been bereaved by Justice Milers death Mrs Miller was deeply moved and when the ceremonies were over Mr Mc Kenney clerk of the court and her son escorted es-corted her from the chamber The others soon followed and went to their homes leaving the casket in tho room At 740 tonight to-night the train bearing the remains left the city for Keokuk Iowa accompanied by the family and 0 few friends of the late justice Chief Justice Fuller Justice Brewer Marshall Mar-shall Wright Mr Faust Justice Millers page and a few others |
