By JUDY JENSEN Editor Much has been written both pro and con regarding the yearly deer hunt. This year, as in years past, nearly 200,000 licensed Utah hunters, which mushrooms to over one half million when each hunter's entourage is counted, headed for the hills on Saturday to try to bag a deer. Proponents of deer hunting praise its glory as a time for "family bonding," bon-ding," a time for rejuvenation and a good way to put meat on the table for families trying to stretch their food dollar. Opponents refer to deer hunting as 'beer" hunting. They criticize the majority of hunters as just looking look-ing for an excuse to "drink alcohol and carry a loaded weapon." Op- r I . - ponents say that the economy of deer hunting is a false economy. "By the time you buy all of the stuff you need to go hunting you're paying a high price per pound for meat," said one detractor. We asked local residents to respond res-pond to the question "What do you think about deer hunting. ' ' "I don't like it because I don't like to see deer get shot," said Nicky Barnes. Nicky admitted that if the right person asked her to go deer hunting she may consent to accompany ac-company him. "I think if they use the meat it's great," said Irene Barnes. "I don't like it if they are just going to leave the meat there, or if they do it just for the kill, but if they use the meat I think it's okay. My husband used to go hunting and now my sons go. In the long run venison is a bargain for young families. ' ' Lorre Fleming supports the idea of deer hunting. 'I think it ' s something that helps out ecology. It's better for the deer to get shot than to starve to death. I think if you're going to hunt you need to use the meat, but it's probably pretty pret-ty expensive meat by the time you buy everything you, need to go hun-rr ting," she said. - ' c ; "I think it's fine to go hunting,' said Rebecca Covey. "My dad goes but he doesn't ever get a deer. He just goes for the fun of it. He goes with my brothers," she said. Bradley Paul is a former deer hunter who supports the idea of hunting. "I like it. I have gone hunting hun-ting before. I always used the venison. I think deer hunting is fine if the hunters are conservative and use good sportsmanship." "I like deer hunting, but I don't like them to kill the deer because they are going to ran out of them," ' said Jeremy Petersen. "I'd like to go hunting, but only to see the deer," he said. |
