communi-cation stating that he had written to several of the largest lumber firma in the west relative to kiln dried materials for I the building and had been informed that he could not getitinless instructed to prepare an ordinance to provide for the placing of all electric I wires underground within the paving districts Referred E E Rich petitioned that the city engineer en-gineer be requested to estimate the cost of paving all alleys leading in and out of blocks 1 2 3 4 and 5 as required by ordinance A parliamentary scrap followed fol-lowed these petitions and the last one was ruled out of order The city recorder reported that sidewalk intention No 33 to extend sidewalks on South Temple street from State to Fourth East had been published as by law provided pro-vided and no protests had been filed in his office Referred i The city recorder reported thatthe plats pertaining to the local assessments for the extension of water mains on Roper Eleventh East streets etc had remained on file in his office for ten days and the notice completion of assessments had been published as provided pro-vided for by law The usual order was made The mayor sent in a communication withdrawing the appointment of James R Terrell and D B Carson as policemen police-men now pending before the council for confirmation Filed GOING TO LEAVE TOWN The city recorder simply as a matter of good faithinformed the council that he would leave for San Francisco next I Saturday to be absent tor three or four weeks and staling that his deputy and clerks would properly handle the business of his office Filed The health commissioner called attention atten-tion to the pool of stagnant water on Sixth West street between South Temple and First South streets Referred to street and sanitary committee with power to act AT THEEE DOLLARS A DAY The health comissloner recommended that five sanitary insnectors be appointed pt once to complete the sanitary canvass I Referred A MUD Adopted ADVERSE TO PRIVATE WALKS The board of public works reported adversely ad-versely upon the petitions of the Groes beck company Holy Cross hospital and H P G Coates asking that they be permitted per-mitted to lay their own sidewalks on the ground that the walks can be constructed as cheaply by the city and that a more uniform character of work can be secured se-cured Referred The board of public works recommended recom-mended that conduits be used instead of catch basin at the intersections on the four blocks of West Temple street and that a trial be made of the ordinary gutters gut-ters with cast iron covers Adopted The city engineer protested against the miscellaneous changing of the names of certain streets and asked that the plats be examined in his office to prevent a repitition of names Adopted FLAGGING FOR PAVEMENT The board of public works recommended that the petition of P T Nystroin et al asking permission to lay flagstone sidewalks side-walks on the south side of First South street between State and Commercial streets be granted Adopted A START ON THE GRAVITY SEWER The committee on sewers recommended that the gravly sewer be extended to Ninth South street and that the city engineer engi-neer be instructed to add the extension to his plans and specifications so that the whole can be included in one setof plans and specifications In connection with this report there was a resolution signed by Hardy Lawson Harrick Folland Horn Evans Heiss Moran Bell and Beardsly follows Resolved That the board of public works and city engineer be and the same are hereby authorized and instructed to proceed to advertise adver-tise for constructing the gravity outlet sewer the plans and specifications of which have been made by the city engineer and that such advertisements ad-vertisements shall invito bids for both concrete and brick masonry reserving to the city the right to use either or both In the work The committees report and the resolution resolu-tion were both adopted NO MINORS IN SALOONS The committee on police recommended that the ordinance prohibiting boys of tender age to visit saloons or billiard halls with saloons in connection be put upon its passage after striking out the words 21 years and inserting 18 years Adopted The ordinance was then taken up The section relating to age was left to read twentyone years and after a few slight amendments was passed The committee on police reported adversely ad-versely upon the appointment of James R Tarrell as a policeman on the ground that he did not pass a satifactory physical physi-cal examination Adopted The same committee reported in like manner on the appointment of D B Carson Car-son on the ground that he had been formerly removed for cause Adopted The Jordan canal and irrigation committee I com-mittee recommended that the petition of Mela E Steele asking that the course of Red Butte ditch be changed be granted if the petitioner desires to do the work at I her own expense Adopted The same committee recommended that the petition of D N Swan et al for flumes on West Temple street at Vance I street and on Paxton avenue and Lucy street be granted Adopted DEPARTMENT REPORTS TO BE PRINTED The committee on enrollment reported on the matter of printing the reports of the heads of departments and recommended recom-mended That 200 copies of the combined reports be ordered at an average of 120 per page and that the Salt Lake Lithograph company com-pany handle the work That 200 copies each of the annual reports re-ports ofthe health police fire and waterworks water-works departments be printed separately in pamphlet form for exchange and distribution dis-tribution That the committee be authorized to have printed 100 copies of the rules and regulations of the police department as per request of the chief of police made in his report to the council That fifty copies of combined reports be ordered bound in full cloth The estimated cost of printing combined com-bined annual reports sixteen pages at 5120 per page 20280 Approximate cost of printing department depart-ment reports in pamphlet form comprising compris-ing about 100 pages at 22 cents per page 2275 The report was adopted The committee on sewers recommended that the petition of Abland Knight that they be allowed to connect with a sewer be granted Adopted STREET GRADING ORDERED The committee on streets recommended in the matter of the petition of Jennings et al asking that First street and Center be graded that the street supervisor be instructed to sufficiently grade these streets as to put them in passable condition condi-tion the total expense not to exceed 900 Adopted The committee on streets recommended that the petition of W E Smedley et al asking that grades be established on the north bench between Ninth and Thirteenth Thir-teenth streets be granted to cover grades as far north as Eleventh street Adopted The committee on prisons submitted
