Show Page 4 Friday, October 2, 1964 THE PARSON Athletic Supporter by Dave Parks This year my column will deal with three major topics: nation wide sports, school spirit, and our own college sports. This year should be the greatest in the last decade. The United States track and field team is the greatest ever assembled by any country in the history of the world. The men of the team have set or tied (pending official approval) eight world records this season: Henry Carr, 200 meters, 20.2; Mike Larrabee, 400 meters, 44.9; Res Cawley, 400 meter hurdles, 49.1; Fred Hansen, Pole Vault, 174; Ralph Boston, Broad Dallas Long, Shot Put 6710; A1 Jump, 274-l- 4; Oerter, Discus, 2066; Hal Connolly, Hammer Throw, 231'10. -- Good news, the W" club has returned this year. Por those who do not know what the club is, it is an organization of guts, not only physical, but mental, too. All the men in this club have earned varsity athletic letters. Mike Murry Reyes is MIKE MURRY er Don Hopkins was the of the Parsons last year. Don averaged 8 points per game and set up many more. Don is majoring in P.E. and minoring in English. He is married and his wife Lynda works. Don is planning on coaching as a career. Don is a real hustler for the team. With his strong desire to win he will be of great value to the team this year; the desire Don has both on and off the field is something to behold. Don Hopkins should go far in sports and in life. Mike Murry is a junior this play-mak- is the president and Leon Peppy They are planning on secretary-treasure- r. an active year, including the sponsorship of several dances and other various activities. This marks an event that we may call the turning point in the Athletic Department. I believe that this year could be one of the greatest in the history of Westminster College. I am looking forward to it with much enthusiasm. MATT BROWN DON HOPKINS Matt Brown should be one of the main stay of the Parsons this year. Matt is a junior and will be playing his second year of varsity basketball; last year he averaged 16 points a game. Matt is majoring in P.E. and minoring in Speech. He is undecided about what he is going to do after graduation. Matt is married and his wife Janey is attending the University of Utah. He likes to hunt and fish, and is interested in all sports. Matt is also an excellent baseball player, and has had several offers to turn pro. All in all we can expect good things from him. year. He is a P.E. major who is planning teaching as a career. Mike is going to participate in spring athletics and football next fall. Mike is from Rawlins, Wyoming and loves to hunt and fish; he is also the Captain of the intra- mural football team Murrys Monsters. Mike has other interests besides Anyone who is sports. During the year there will be competition in volleyball, basketball, softball, tennis, track and field, and badminton. Competition is by class (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior). A delicate point system is used in determining the Grand Champion which wUl be decided at the end of the school year. The Parson encourages Westminster students to participate as players or spectators in as many of the intramural activities as possible. The intramurals provide good competition, real excitement, and increased school spirit. The schedules of games will be posted on the various bulletin boards the campus. JUNIORS FAVORED IN FOOTBALL I-- M havent seen the freshmen in operation yet but judging on last years results the juniors rate as the favorites in footbaU. Last year, as sophomores, the famed Murrys Monsters destroyed all other competition, breezing thru the seaWe son undefeated.
