Shortly we will go our separate ways to the family fold to celebrate Americas biggest and most profitable holiday. Christmas is almost here. Then, we are assured from earliest childhood, Santa Claus will make our wildest dreams come true. Then we will get our hearts desire. Somehow the jolly old fellow will miraculously provide exactly what we want in just the right size, color, and model. And all of this will be done without a bit of effort on our part. But the Santa Claus aspects of Christmas 'are no longer, relegated to the holiday season alone. Though Christmas comes but once k year, there 'is a growing tendency for all of us' to engage in the Santa Claus type of wishful thinking throughout the year. We dream our dreams, we wish our wishes, and then patiently await the miracle of accomplishment. The theory seems to be that if we wait long enough, some Santa Claus, parent, friend, teacher, classmate, even the government, will come along and provide the miracle. Everyone wanted a campus newspaper and said so in writing, and then waited patiently for the miracle. Everyone wants an active stu- 4 East against the West -- Russia against the United States nations against nations friends, enemies; a constant struggle for power. Guided missiles, atom bombs, hydrogen bombs, cobalt bombs to come. This is 1957, the year of prosperity, the year of stockpiles of deadly weapons; the year man is applying every ounce of his scientific knowledge, not to the betterment of our society, but to more effective ways to destroy, maim and lay in ruins what has taken centuries to build- Today man has that can lay the greatest cities in the world in ruins in a matter of seconds. This is mans great post-wa- r achievement, this is the Christmas message, good will to man and carrying out of the peace on earth. How long can this go on, this struggle for power, before humanity destroys itself? Every day of the year millions of dollars are poured into this struggle necessary for survival in. an insecure world, not only by the United States and the Soviet Union, but by every nation in the world, inside or outside the Iron Curtain. Why? Because of political differences? Because democracy stands for freedom and justice; communism, for tyranny. One stands for the right of every man to shape hi$ own future an ddestiny; the other for the right of the state to exercise absolute control. For one group, GOD is love, regardless of faith or church. For the other, fear is the only god. . Wishful Thinking - H-bom- bs Since, the second World War the Soviet Union has been involved in overthrowing the governments of other nations, expanding piece by piece, little by little. In 1949 she got a foot hold in the Far East when she put China under her rule. In 1951 she began aggression, indirectly, in Korea. The only reason she did not succeed was because of firm action by the United Nations. The march of the U.S.S.R- to digest nations had to finally be stopped. Three years ago she tried to get a foothold on the American continent in Guatemala. Today her partner, China, is virtually engaged in war in the Strait of Formosa. - These are the reasons why the scientist of today is occupied with the construction of weapons of destruction instead of weapons of peace to benefit mankind and make living easier. But is this the answer to our problem? To arm, rearm, get ready for war, live in constant fear of instant death? Is the power of destruction the factor that is to rule the world? Are we to say that man is not intelligent enough to see that this is the way to end our civilization? NO. The United Nations was organized in an attempt to settle disputes between nations, which it has shown can be done both in Palestine and in Greece. But these are small nations. What power can the U.N. exercise in case of a struggle between world powers? How can it hope to control this menace to civilization? It can not, as it has no way of enforcing the charter that its members signed; it lacks power. Perhaps we could remedy this. If the nations of the world would swallow a little false pride; give up just a little of their individuality; surrender some of their unreal power to the United Nations they could give it the power it needs. By so doing, they could REALLY unite the nations and make the Christmas message not just something to be read every Christmas morning but one that could and should be real 365 days in every year, GOOD WILL TO MAN AND PEACE ON EARTH. When this day comes then Christmas will have its real meaning. MERRY CHRISTMAS! t December 12, 1957 Mr. A1 R. Mercer Football Coach Westminster College Dear Coach Mercer: The following resolution was unanimously passed by the Faculty at faculty meeting on Thursday, December 5: Resolved, that the Faculty of Westminster College go on record as commending the coaches, members, and personnel of the 1 W MtmlnBitt ,Ft-T- .' C. Bajlenger, Dean . . . giving,' would not our wishes come true just the same? If we could learn to give of ourselves, our time, energy, and ability, would not there be gain for all of us. Everyone gives a little time and effort and the miracle happens, a campus newspaper without overburdening a few. Everyone gives a little time and support and the miracle happens, an active and enthusiastic student program. Everyone gives time, effort, and thought to his studies and the miracle happens, academic sue- cess is achieved and a satisfactory vocation approached. Everyone gives of himself and the. miracle is accomplished a little bit at a time. Wishing and waiting may be the easy course, but they cannot compare with giving and working for results. ALLAN W. BOSCH . . . registrar. dent government program and a good social program and after saying so waits patiently for the miracle. Everyone supposedly comes to college for an education, but many after paying the tuition sit idly by waiting for the miracle to be performed. Everyone wants a pleasing and profitable vocation and having made the wish, many await the miracle of achievement. We have all of us come to expect many things to be given to us just for the wishing. But there is more to Christmas than just the receiving of gifts. From the first Christmas with the gift of Gods Son, the best of Christmas has been found in the idea and act of giving. Giving is the very essence of Christmas, yet our focus upon the getting of gifts frequently obscures the fact that without the giver there would be no gift. If the Santa Claus aspects of Christmas can spread throughout the year, would it not be as fitting and proper for the giving aspects of Christmas to spread in like fashion? If we focused on Perhaps it is well that the new year follows Christmas so closely. The Fantasy ends and then comes a new beginning. With the new beginning comes a time of stock taking for each of us. This is a time to ponder our successes and failures, our getting and our giving, our efforts here and our lack of effort there. If we can abandon our childish concentration upon getting and focus upon the mature contributions that can come from the giving of ones self, there will be benefits for each of us as well as for all of us. The faculty and staff of the college are particularly hopeful of the student evaluations of their own academic progress, for shortly the faculty will be called upon to give its evaluation. We are currently engaged in the evaluation and organization of the college program for next semester and the next school year. We are sincerely trying to make available to the students the best possible educational opportunities. We sincerely hope that the students will give of their time and ability to take full advantage of these opportunities in the coming year. A Merry Christmas and a Happy and Thoughtful New Year. -- SAD CYNIC by Art Sutton The United Spring Company has taken an option with Westminster College for the next few winter months till the sun shall shine again and drive away the snow. It seems that the company is equipping some test cars with their springs, and are running them through the campus. It is a test to be based on how many Burman chuck holes can be hit without breaking an axel. It is estimated that you can not drive straight through the campus without at least using the springs ONCE? Goodrich, is also putting an establishment across the street from the school for the express purpose of furnishing the test cars with tires. Of course if Springborns Issetta ever hit a hole, we would never see it or him again. Everyday we are getting more modern, even on the reservation. I am Brave Eagle, said the Indian Chieftain, introducing himself to the paleface visitor. This is my son, Fighting Bird. And here, he added, is my grandson, DC-- 6. I would like to send out a special SNEAR to all those not going to the dance this Saturday, may they all run out of gas while parked in the hills.
