FORUMFORTNIGHTLY.COM 1 What people probably aren't telling iim you Jessie Smith EDITOR-IN-CHIE- F Editor-In-Chi- ef JESSIE SMITH I get genuinely excited whenever a new academic year starts. I order my books and MANAGING EDITOR HILLARY FOWLER ONLINE EDITOR when they arrive, flip through the pages and breathe in that new book smell. I get to campus early in the morning so I can watch the students trickle into the Commons. I take copious notes on my syllabus about course requirements. These habits started after freshman year, though. During my first year on West- SARA MCCASKEY ONLINE MANAGER PETER CHEW BUSINESS MANAGER RILEY SHELDON PRODUCTION MANAGER JACKSON LINK ADVISER KIMZARKIN minsters campus, I was too CONTRIBUTING WRITERS concerned with shaping my entire college career (and myself) to worry about people watching or book sniffing. Looking back, there are three notable things that Ive learned since then. KIRA JEFFERSON WILLERMISH GRAHAM BECKSTEAD ALI FAIRCHILD APRILTORRES 1. You don't have to beat them, or join them. CONTACT 1840 S. 1300 One of the mantras youre probably hearing right now is get involved. The people telling you that have good E. SHAW L3 SLC, UTAH EDITORIAL reasons, which I wont list here. (Theyve likely already told you. If they havent, ask them.) What I will say, though, is not to be afraid to say no, or to try something out before you commit to it. My reasoning? Your world has completely shifted. You have all new responsibilities has been and your tipped on its head. Its okay to figure out how to manage your time before allocating a large portion of it to something outside of your top priorities. Its fair to tell a club president that you want to come to the meetings, but dont want to join just yet. Make sure that youre confident you have time for your course load and other main concerns before you pick up extra commitments. Itll save day-to-d- ay stress later on. 2. Critical listening, not just thinking, is key. In this new place, youll do a lot of learning about how to voice your thoughts, both formally and informally. Professors will push you to not only say what youre thinking, but to back it up. That backing it up stuff is powerful, both on and off campus. So, be responsible with your critical thinking, and temper your speaking with listening. Youre going to encounter an enormous diversity of thought here, and youll only be taken as seriously as you take others. 3. Stay informed. Finally, this first semester will be a whirlwind of classes, clubs, roommates and friends. Through all of that, I encourage you to stay informed. (This is the part where I tell you to read the paper.) Try reading one national and one local headline a week. For extra points, read one from your hometown. And, of course, dont miss out Forum! Sometimes, campus feels like a bubble. In some ways, it is. But, in many others, its not. The local businesspeople and Sugar House residents you encounter are greatly affected by the current events in Salt Lake City. Your professors and classmates are both affected by the national news. Most importantly, you are, too. Knowing whats going on helps you back up your thoughts, and helps you decide where your time will be best spent. In short, it helps you be a better citizen, of both the college and the larger community. As liberal arts students, becoming better citizens is a lot of what were here to do, so lets do it well.
