I'M B0RR0WM UCR TM5 WEEK FOR 50MC BEHAVIORAL 5TUDIE5. ) I the editor Karen Hendry Student Sendees Hi Krista, I liked your article about Westminster and Sugar House. Its fun to imagine how the neighborhood dynamics could change in the next few years... students connecting more with the area and neighbors participating more in campus events, instead of just being unhappy about college students as neighbors. Decades ago there was more interaction. When we had a football team, there was a homecoming parade through Sugar House. The old yearbooks carried ads from area merchants, and there were a couple of hang outs including a bar called the Sugar Bowl, it was near where the Soup Kitchen is now. I thought you might be interested to know the college actually moved to this location over Christmas break 1910, and classes started here for the first time Jan. 9 or 10 of 1911. (I think we should have an 006 John Kroea www.lde-ontme.co- anniversary party in January 2011!) Before then we were at 200 South 200 East in Downtown. Even after we started Sheldon Jackson College in approximately school for years as 1896, we still ran our original 2 the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute. We became Westminster in 1902, built the college chapel at 1700 South 1100 East (where Salt Lake Costume was) in 1905, dedicated Converse Hall in 1906 and Ferry Hall (where Gore is) in 1907 but couldnt afford to finish, heat or furnish Converse or K-1- Ferry till 1910....and had no place to board the students who needed it till Ferry was finished. We were out in the country in those days. And we actually didnt hold any college classes between 1909 and 1914, probably due to World War I. Weve had an interesting history, full of financial struggle, until the last 20 years or so. Itll be great to watch what terrific things Westminster does in the future. Thanks for writing your article to get the campus community thinking about these things! r Students Speak Out What are you doing to prepare for graduation?
