With the onset of elections week, candidates are busy campaigning, inundating students with candy, fliers and other sorts of election paraphernalia. However, there may not be as many candidates as in years past. As of Friday night, when applications were due, there were only 26 people running for the senate, with 40 open positions. The only competitive senate seat is Pure and Applied Science Senate, which has five available positions and seven applicants. The lack of applicants caused Elections Chair Chris Brinkerhoff to open up the Senate applications again until Thursday at 5 p.m. While the senate may not have much of a contest, there are some challenges growing for the executive cabinet positions. Ray Bradford is unopposed in his campaign for the presidency, but the office of vice president is coveted by two candidates, Seth Long-hurand Tyson Smith. Both candidates have extensive past experience with ASWC; Longliurst has been a senator, Smith has been a senator and the activities coordinator. Tough competition is also arising between current Director of Clubs and Organizations Rebecca Givens, and current senator Annette Smith, who are both running for Director of Clubs and Organizations. While Givens is very familiar with clubs because of her experience in the position, Smith said she is also qualified. Right now, I am the intramural club sport coordinator, so I really enjoy working with clubs, said Smith. Current Senator Adam st $ U Rich, the only student running for the nursing senate position, reinforced the importance of students getting involved on campus, especially in student government. You create the environment in which you reside, so you should have some say in what is going on around you, he said. Hunter Richardson, a freshman at Westminster, is running for the position of business senator to get some insight into how the political system works at a small college. He is embracing the learning aspects of being involved, saying that he also wanted to learn more about the school and how it operates. theyre bad for you.
