Show THE FORUM 4 October 8, 2003 iRocky Point is More Than a Cheap Thrill haunted by old spirits. Not too impressive on the fright level; but, quite intricate attention to Jolinda Nestor Staff Writer The Rocky Point Haunted house offers students more than just a cheap thrill. My heart rate did not lower until I was home, safe in bed. It starts as soon as you pull into the parking lot. Dead people, resembling the sleepwalking creeps from Night of the Living Dead, are out wandering the area in front of the entrance. The key is to not look too scared, this makes them think you are just there for fun, and cant really be scared. Why would they waste their time on you when they can scare the living day lights out of another person, like me! Once you have paid, the labyrinth like journey begins. The first place you enter is an actual haunted house, which is set up like the cliche early 19th century home with spider webs and of course it is hour-lon- g -- detail on the appearance. By the time we made it through this little group of rooms, I was thinking to myself, Its not so bad here. You see, I have never actually made it all the way through a haunted house before; I have always exited out one of the emergency exits. Sometime after the haunted rooms, there was a carnival sign. Before we were allowed behind the curtains, we had to put on The next theme we had to pass through was the Lord of the Rings. This was my favorite. We were actually journeying on what seemed to be the same path as Frodo and Sam. Then there was the little guy Gollum whispering and jump out at you. The worst part about the carnival is that you have to ask one of the freaky clowns to show you the Then they bang on the movie. Then you start to feel like is this ever going to end? Well, the end is near after the Insane Asylum. It seems that the doctors are more dedicated to horror movies and serial killers. its spectacular. The last half of the haunted house was dedicated to horror movies and serial killers. The beginning was a wax museum of all of the movie legends, including Staff Writer In a recent article written by Jake Parkinson in Salt Lakes City Weekly about the upcom- ing Salt Lake City mayoral election, each of the three candidates was interviewed to help us understand who the candidates are and not so much the issues being debated. Pignanelli, 43, a former lawmaker and lobbyist and former minority leader of the Utah House of Representatives for six years. Although I agree and have been enlightened with this information about the candidates, my question to Parkinson is, despite who the candidates are and their backgrounds, doesnt it really come down to dollars and cents in an election like this? The candidates for our mayoral election are: Rocky Anderson, Molonai Hola and Frank Pignanelli. Some simple facts from Parkinsons Pignanelli told Parkinson, The city isnt better off now than it was three years ago when Anderson took office, and the city needs a change aka a new mayor. findings are: Hola, 38, CEO of Icon, an information technology company. A once westsider since April. Overall, the campaign is going really well, Anderson told Parkinson. I am really proud of the kind of campaign we have been running. And, although he doesnt having migrated from Tonga as a child who now resides on the East Bench. Running as the only Republican and minority in the race, not to mention member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y a Saints, he is not shy. Hola runs a crazy then the patients in this place. They should be the ones who are locked up. There were so many operating rooms with disgusting things going on. Lots of blood, thats all Im going to say. The insane asylum culminates and is followed by some dancing vampires; and of course a Dr. Frankenstein set up. Only Frankenstein was a real person I wasnt expecting that, so it was a little freaky. I couldnt believe I had made it this far. There was only one more obstacle to overcome, the chainsaw massacre. He was a nut case. I just closed my eyes and ran for my life. I could smell the gas burning and the noise was unbearable. Everyone should go check out this spooky haunted house, its definitely worth the 11 dollars. Just make sure you and grab a stop by voucher so you wont have to pay the origiorial $14 admission. But, be careful because not all of the statues are made of wax... If you survive the thrill of the museum, then you enter Elm Street, and you are face to face with Freddy himself. He is no where to be found until you think you have exited and really its a closet, so you turn around and BAM! He is standing right there behind you with a bloody knife. I almost had a heart attack. It goes on like this for glasses. This made it a little difficult to actually see the monsters until they were right up in your face. Dont look too long at the pictures on the wall, because they will way. wall and you are free ,to go. of which grass-root- s Anderson, a former lawyer before serving as Salt Lakes mayor, is concerned, as anyone in his shoes would be, since his voter support has decreased from 49 percent to 41 percent, according to the poll belong to any organized religion, Anderson is a true follower of political correctness. The big concern however is that with all this said and done and despite who the candidates really are and what they stand for is it an election of wealth. Parkinson reported and disclosed that Holas $75,000 campaign piggy bank looks like a stack of quarters next to Andersons $500,000 and Pignanellis $230,000. Hola doesnt seem to care that he is the underdog and stands alone in many ways, commendable but money does have an effect on the outcome of an election. A poll taken by NBC news in New York in 2002 stated that an elections outcome is direedy affected by the amount of money spent by a candidate, and that statistics show that 62 percent of those candidates that have the means by which to get their agendas financially have a better standing when it comes to the final count at the polls. So does this make Anderson the favorite and Hola the underdog? Money in an election like this is certainly a big help, it opens doors, presents opportunities and allows for more freedom to campaign and not stress over the financial aspects of an election. The Primary Election Tuesday narrowed the field to two.CS |
