"If youre standpoints," in it for the competition, youll get competition. If you're in It to have fun because you like the sport you are playing, you'll get that too." People at all levels of fitness and ability are encouraged to participate. Intramural activities are not only open to students, but to faculty, staff, and alumni and their family members as well. Many people say that socially, sporting activities are a great way to meet people and get involved In other events on campus. By far, the most popular intramural sport at Westminster is co- - recreational volleyball, which is being offered Wednesday nights from 9 p.m. to 1 1 p.m. in Payne Gymnasium. For basketball enthusiasts, mens competition will be offered year round. Teams in these categories have the opportunity to play on club teams In the county and city leagues. In addition, competition In flag football, softball, and womens basketball have spurred much interest from students on campus. Organizaiton of teams is the only thing at this time preventing these activities from getting off the ground. "I encourage people to give me the feedback as to what they are interested in playing," Haussmann said. "There are a lot of people out there who want to play. Its Just a matter of getting tournaments organized with team captains." Other events offered outside of these activites are tennis tournaments, which allow students to compete in matches at "You can look five-on-fl- ve times convenient to their schedules, and golf tournaments, which are offered In fall and spring. An exchange program with the University of Utah is another Incentive for students to get involved In the intramural Events offered through the program. Passes to the athletic facilities at the University of Utah can be purchased by those Involved in this program for only $7.50 per quarter. The outdoor recreation program is new to Westminster this year for those whose interests lean toward outdoor activities. "I really saw a need for that here. There was absolutely nothing in that area and it seems like we have a lot of people who enjoy outdoor things," Haussmann said. Weekend and day-lon- g trips will be offered to students at different times throughout the school year at much reduced prices. A trip to Arches National Park Is scheduled for SepL 24 and 25 for only $10 a person. Bryce Canyon will be the site for the journey taken In November. The biggest venture of the year will be a trip to Jackson Hole, Wyo. during winter break. For those who have never visited the various national and state parks, the outdoor recreation, program offers an enjoyable and Inexpensive way to do so. In addition to recreational activities, there will also be instructional classes offered on campus in aerobics, dance and karate. "If people want an activity and we can get at least ten people committed to participate, I will probably find a way to offer it," Haussmann stated. For more information on any of the activities offered through the Sports and Recreation Department, see either of the two informaiton boards located in Shaw Center and Payne Gymnasium where applications are available. Registering for the individual and team activities does require a small forfeit fee which will be returned at the close of the competition.
