Show THE FORUM 4 September 17, 2003 Hillaric Browning Staff Writer As children, visions of a fair rolling into town brought feelings of exhilaration and adventure. When Fair Week hit Westminster Campus last Tuesday, students were met with a myriad of exciting opportunities available to them both on and off campus. A little rain didnt cancel the parade of volunteers and representatives who streamed into Shaw Center to set up displays and calendars as well as bowls of free candy to offer to the casual passerby. Although there were no pony rides or caramel popcorn, the fair offered students a chance to get involved with clubs and organizations on college grounds, as well as within the Salt Lake community. was the Tuesdays kick-of- f Study Abroad Fair. There were plenty of warnings about studying hard, and not partying too much. Of course, they all took a sick pleasure in reminding me how expensive everything was. But the number one warning about college life was about hair in the showers. Showers just arent as clean there as they are at home, one concerned family member informed me. Another friend, who had just graduated from college herself, warned me not to touch the walls of the showers, because that is where most hair lurks after people are finished taking their showers. I was scared. Im not one of those girls who freaks out whenever I see a loose hair anywhere (although I have a strange fetish with picking the -- peoples shirts), but this sounded intense. In my mind, I could see a little tiny shower with me in the middle, afraid to touch anything because of a carpet of hair. My mind was put to rest after our first floor meeting, where one of the girls requested that everybody clean up their own hair, and the other girls on my floor all agreed. No worries. After the first two weeks without having any major issues with hair in the campus great way to meet new people and Chris develop new skills and interests. There is something available for everyone, said ASWC Club and Organization chair, Chris Wharton., If you havent already signed up for something, contact ASWC and get involved showers, I stopped worrying. Until last week. I went to take my shower, like I do every morning. I set down my clothes to change into, and opened up the shower curtain so I could step in. To my horror, a thick wad of wet brown hair was covering the drain to the shower. Normally, I am not the type of person that shirks responsibility. This time, however, I quickly glanced around for another open shower. I did not want anything to do with that mess of hair. I winced out loud when I saw that they were all taken. I walked out to get a paper towel. I looked like somebody who was entering prison on a life sentence. Slowly, I returned to the shower, arid scooped up all the nasty brown hair. I then took it out to the trash, and took my shower, all the while con- centrating on not letting myself throw up. So maybe I should not have dismissed all that careful, advice from my family and friends so soon. Maybe I would be better off to assume the worst no matter what. Then again, maybe not. I still have not had any nightmares about cleaning up someone elses hair, and Im not scared to go into the showers well-meani- Friday marked the final day of Fair Week with the Faith Fair. Kevin Myers of the Holladay United Church of Christ said diat religion is important for students because, it gives you a place to center yourself, and a place to escape from college life. He said he is a better person because of the solace that his religion gives him. Members of the First Congregational Church and American Baptist Churches were available as well.
