Show EdI Will President Stock Address Student's Complaint? Wednesday September 25 Dear President Stock, Peggy Before I say why I am writing this letter to you, I would like you to why I am it to you instead of sending it to you personally. I fig- ure that you probably dont read most of the mail that you get. Instead you have your secretaries read it for you and then they tell you if it is important or not. I am hoping that by writing this letter through the computer that you, yourself will read this, not one of your secretaries. am a dorm student here at Westminster, and I am very disappointed with the food plan that I am on at the moment. I loans, in all actuality, is so that I can have the food plan which I do not even want to have. Now, I would like to just get off of the food plan so that I can buy my own groceries and cook my own food. I have been told that even though the food makes me sick, and even though I dont spend my money here that I am not able to get off of the food plan. This too, I think is ridiculous. I do not want to sound like a jerk, I just this opportunity to tell you why I am disappointed with the food plan. First of all, they have no variety. I am sure that for people who do not have to eat there three meals a day everyday, the variety is great, but for me, there is no variety. Second, the prices are way too high for the type of food and the quality of food that we are getting. I pay $1300.00 a semester, but I only get to spend $650.00 of that. That is wrong. Just because I am a dorm student, I should not have to be supporting our food service. 1 think that everyone should be responsible for that, not just the dorm students. Thirdly, I was told that even if I did not want to eat want people to know how I feel. I would just like to know what the people think who are paying my scholarships, giving me loans, and letting me row money from them. Do you think that they would be happy to find out that they are paying for a food plan which I do not even use? I do not think that I would be happy if I were one of those people, and I bor-kno- w do not think that you would be either, I would like to take I have tried talking with both Lorrie in food services, Kate Kilpatrick-Mille- r director or student 1 So your classes are stressful. So youve got tests already. So your instructors are tyrants. So what? Big deal. They all pale in comparison to the massive, looming deadline to submit your original poetry, photographs, artwork or , , stories to Id life; and Susan Heath. Just so that these people will not get into trouble, they were very understanding and said that they agreed with my situation. They also said that they were not in a position where they could let me off of the food plan or else they would. I am hoping that by sending you this letter that you will be able to help my situation a little bit. If not, then at least I have made my feelings known to someone of a higher of rank than Dean Students. I have been told that the only way to get off of this food plan is to have a doctors note. Well, I think that is ridiculous! I pay $1300.00 for the A food plan a semester, only to be able to spend $650.00 of that just so that I can get sick. Yes, I mean that too. The thought of the cafeteria food literally makes me sick. Instead of buying the food here, I go to Albertsons and buy groceries so that I can cook my own food. If I were rich, or if my education was fully paid for by someone other than myself, I would not have a problem with this. I do have a problem though, because I am taking out loans that I will have to repay. One of these . . , ; Ellipsis: Literature and Art. Nothing else matters at this point. Well, this is wrong as I found out the other night. I went to the cafeteria to get two chicken breasts so that I could cook them myself. I was told they were cooked, or frozen solid that I could not buy them. that unless The reason for this? I was told that, being nineteen years old, I do not know how to cook my own chicken so that it gets cooked all the way through. Sorry, but I have been cooking since I turned fifteen, and not once have I gotten sick because I have eaten raw chicken. Well, I had Dan, the cook, fix the chicken for me. When I got my chicken breasts, they were only a third of the size of a normal chicken breast, and they were burnt to a crisp. I could have cooked them much faster, and they would not have been totally black, nor would they nave been raw. This summer, 'due to some health problems, I went to a doctor and in talking to him, I asked if there was any reason why I should not, or could not be eating the cafeteria food. He told me that I should not be eating the food because of my system and what me system needs in order to stay healthy, but he could not find a reason for that, so he would not give a note. Now, I know of people in the dorms who are off of the food plan who had a doctor sign a note. I know for a fact that half of these people really have nothing wrong with them. They are just lucky enough to find doctors who are willing to lie for them so that they do not have to eat this food. I will not say who these people are because once again, I do not want to get anyone in trouble. Now, I have some suggestions on how to make this easier to handle. For those who do not want a food plan, give them a choice of getting off of the plan. If, due to cost, that - See stock Page 4 |
