Ive always had a real passion for art history, she said. Now is the perfect time to write this book because of increasing interest in roles women have played in history, also because of a resurgence of interest in Victorian art, she said. There is a good market now for books on art history and art history critism because not much has been published in these areas, said Harris. Harris decided the focus for the book and then began looking for a publisher. She started with the top publisher in the country and worked her way down the list. She didnt have to look very hard. She was successful in obtaining a contract with the second publisher she tried. Garland Publishing in New York. The book will be an annotated bibliography of women professionally involved in the art world during the period from 1836-190This is roughly the time of Queen Victorias reign, who was herself an amateur painter. 1. Harris said she made great progress on her project this summer thanks to a grant she received from thcNaom i Wchycr Faculty Development Endowment Fund and also support from Westminster College. Dr. Stephen Baar, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty, said, The intent of the grant is to make it possible for faculty to pursue their individual creative research or intellectual interests during the summer. Harris said the grant was really a gift of time, which was greatly appreciated, since she is writing the book in her spare time apart from teaching classes. In the past, according to Baar, Westminster College had no support to offer faculty members as incentive to work further in their fields. Because of this, Robert Wchycr, Sr., established an endowment in honor of his wife, Naomi. The grant funds arc awarded by the Wcyhcr children - Robert Wchycr, Jr., William Wchycr and Bonnie Sucrig - after reveiwing applications from Westminster faculty. Harris was chosen from six fulltime faculty members who applied for the grant.
