Show news Mayor De Paulis Speaks At Ceremony Applauds Students And President by "I applaud Westminster and its students for Erick Scheen their efforts toward academic excellence, said Salt Lake Mayor Palmer DePaulis was the convocation speaker and honorary inductee at the Phi Eta Sigma, Westminsters freshman honor society, initiation ceremony held on April 1. In all, 16 new members including DePaulis were honored. DePaulis, and wish you students and this institution continued success. In his address, DePaulis said he had the highest regard for Westminster College, par ticularly its president, Charles Dick. Dick currently serves on the Project 2,000 Salt Lake City Tomorrow Mayors Advisory Committee. DePaulis emphasized the fact that students have many choices regarding their future. In most situations you must have performed well in college in order to get a foothold on that first rung of a career ladder or to pursue an advanced degree, DePaulis said. After his address, DePaulis was presented with a Westminster sweatshirt and a Westminster pen and pencil set as tokens of Phi Eta , by Robert Gore During the week of March 20, the Business Club sponsored several business people to come and talk with Westminster students about various types of functions in a business. Chuck Christensen, marketing director at Dunn and Bradstreet, spoke on Basic Marketing and Salesmanship, according to Scott Maynard, President of Phi Beta Lamda. Christensen said every company should ask itself three marketing questions: What business are we really in, who are our customers, and what does this company want and desire? According to Christensen, there are four key ideas from world experience: target marketing, market research, and advertising. Their are nine ways to fail in business according to Christensen. Neglecting customers, fraud, lack of experience, lack of managerial experience, a misleading name, over inventory, not collecting accounts receivable, not forecasting future trends and poor location are all ways a business can potentially fail. Sixty percent of companies that fail do so because of inadequate sales, said Christensen. Christensen noted that sales people can cause a great deal of damage to a company when not directed correctly. First, in marketing, they may spend too much time talking to the wrong people. Second, in sales, when sales people say too many wrong things to the right people they can also hurt a company. In the world we all live in there are so many good talkers but so few good listeners. To be eligible to join Phi Eta Sigma, one must maintain a 3.5 or above grade point average for a semester of his or her freshman year.
