Utah Page 2 Editorial Industrys Atomic Role The Electric Light and Power Industry and equipment makers are maintaining a lead in the development of nuclear energy for the uses of electric power for the benefit of the people as fast as possible. More than $300,000,000 have been involved by companies or groups in the planning, construction, and research in this great new source of energy that all Americans hope will be put to peacetime uses. Some utility companies are participating in the planning or building of atomic reactors right now, and 113 companies are active in this field. The problem of merely producing electricity from splitting the atom has been solved. The job of industry now is to get it down' to a price that is competitive with the conventional ways of developing electricity, by coal, oil or waterfalls. This is quite a job in America, where electricity is cheap. It is not such a problem in other countries where the cost has not been brought down so low. In this country, the cost of electricity has been one of the few products that has lowered in price in die midst of rising costs of living. Recently a task force on nuclear power was set up by the industry to keep all companies abreast of the developments in the various types of reactors. This group, which will be posed of nuclear scientists and executives, will review the designs and report to local companies die most promising types that might be used economically. It will be the job of this group to see that the entire industry In the MORE MERCURY DEVELOPMENT District Consolidated Mer- Wild Horse $225 Per Flask Mercury Gets Government Boost is kept aware of the developments so they can maintain world leadership in the best methods of using nuclear fission to provide electricity for the homes and factories of the nation.
