Gem directors Phil Anderson and George T. Taylor viewed the chrome facing measuring approximately 10 feet high and eight feet wide. Gem owns 35 per cent interest in the mine run by Comstock Uranium and Tungsten Co. According to Anderson the extent of the ore body is not known, but steel drill rod tests measure 15 feet above the tunnel and 31 and 9 feet in two direct tions. Annual capacity of the Albany plant is about 300,000 pounds of zirconium sponge metal and several thousand pounds of hafnium metal. Hafnium which is contained in zirconium ores, likewise has important uses in the atomic energy field. The Bureau of Mines began producing zirconium experimentally at Albany in 1945, and three years later, was operating a small pilot plant capable of producing 60 pounds week. of sponge metal In 1948 the AEC and Navy Departments Bureau of Ships became interested in zirconium as a construction material because the metal does not trap neutrons needed to sustain a chain reaction. At the request of these two agencies, and with their financial support, the Bureau enlarged its plant to reach a peak of more than 280,000 pounds a year. After private industry entered the zirconium field and began producing the metal in quantity, the Bureau shut down the Albany plant last spring at the direction of the Atomic Energy Commission. At that time the AEC requested specifically that the Bureau main- AVOID COSTLY POWER FAILURES WITH EQUIPMENT FROM POLE LINE DISTRIBUTING CO. gineer J. M. The ore is processed at the Comstock concentrating mill and shipped to Grants Pass, Ore. Gem, headed by President Ernest Zobrist, Salt Lake City, has 35 per cent interest in two additional properties the Ward and Zero in Oregon.
