This compared with a deficit of $103,643 in 1945. President C. A. Norris in his report to stockholders said 1946 resulted In a net overall deficit before depreciation of $94,021, after taking into account net re- -, turns from plant absorption I; cleanups of $57,736. He said this! continued good showing of low maintenance costs ' of Alaska properties will soon suffer some reversal by the more or less rapid deterioration due to age and disuse of property and plant facilities. For these reasons much repair work will have to be doneii both on the surface and under-j- i ground, before mine operations, can commence and will be a heavy burden when, the work of reopening begins, he added... Maintained by Mines Bureau drift cores or ore samplings obtained during 23 exploration projects in 11 western States is maintained by the Bureau of Mines at its Mount Weather experimental station in Bluemont, Va., according to a publication released today by Dr. R. R. Sayers, Bureau Director. Providing permanent tangible records of diamond-drillin- g explorations for strategic and critical minerals carried on the Bureau in the Eastern by United States during the past seven years, the core library also enables Bureau scientists to continue their studies of ore specimens collected during mineral investigations. In addition to aiding mineralogical research, the room represents a contribution to a national inventory of domestic mineral resources. Situated in an unused drift in the test adit, the room contains wooden racks built in sections. Specially designed isnd numbered core trays holding the various ore specimens have been inserted in the racks, and both racks and trays have been treated, with wood preservatives.,. The depletion allowance for gold mines will be increased from 33 1- -3 per cent to 40 per cent of profits earned on and after Jan. 1, 1947. This will apply to mines the value of whose output is to the extent of 70 per cent or more from gold. By. widening .the margin 'Of retainable profits the well established mines should be. able to utilize more low grade ore than they might otherwise feel not worthwhile to bring to the surface. The second proposal is directed particularly toward the low grade marginal mines where the impact of adverse conditions has been most severe. As a special relief measure in this direction it is proposed that the amount allowed' as depletion for gold mines, as defined' above, shall not in any case be less than $4 per ounce of gold produced. 1945.
