Students ry- - It all began when PTA officers be held to suggested a develop interest in reading. A large bookworm was to begin in the main hall, and hopefully circle the school as each child received a segment of the worm to add when he or she read a book. The original goal was to have students read a quarter of a million pages. But soon the worm became so popular it was decided to open the project up to the Sue community, explained Weierman, chairman, and students, teachers, parents and friends were all invited to read and have a segment bearing their name added to the Bennion read-a-tho- n read-a-tho- n Worm. Soon Ken the principal, Higgins, said, "Lets try for a million." The seven-wee- k project has Mrs. said succeeded, Weierman. The worm now circles up and down halls around the entire school. Pages read have topped the one million goal, and there are more than 15,000 segments in the schools worm, she noted. Dr. Higgins told the students he do would whatever they suggested when they reached the million mark, she explained. A variety of ideas, some wilder than others, were submitted, and the one chosen was to have the principal dress like a worm, ride in a hot air balloon and spend lunch time in a cage in the lunch room. Although he is afraid of heights, Dr. Higgins agreed to fulfill his Kites To Fly High Next Week As Students Celebrate March KEARNS. Monday morning, attired in best worm fashion, he entered the hot air balloon but prevailing winds prevented the flight, which has been postponed until a better day. Also on Monday, still dressed as a worm, Dr. Higgins sat in a cage in the lunchroom reading a book and eating his lunch where all the kids could visit him, she said. The principal also visited each room, reading nursery rhymes to the students and handing out worms gummy bearing the message, "Youre worth a million, thanks from King Worm." "It was a wonderful project. Students who had never been interested in reading wanted to have their segment on the worm. Resource students stretched their ability to participate. Fifth and sixth graders read to kindergarteners to bring up their averages. Everyone found out reading can be fun," she said.
