They are ail part of a new program being developed this year at Kearns junior high to motivate seventh and eighth grade students whose academic performance is below grade level in reading, said Janice Petersen, director of the new PRIME program. acronym for Prescrip-tion- , Instruction, Motiviation and Evaluation, she explained. The program involves 323 students, the director, six teachers and 15 aides, with the students involved in PRIME classes anywhere from one to three periods daily Students registered for PRIME reading, English or math were tested during the first week of school to determine their placement in the wide variety of new, individualized materials used in the program, explained Mrs. Petersen. Each student works at his own speed on the particular skills -skills needed to im- prove overall formance in per- school. Students work independently, with a teacher and aides circulating in the room to answer questions and give assistance if needed. Students find there is no waiting period before work is corrected. All assignments are corrected immediately by an - a Answerman selected student, an aide or the teacher, so the student receives immediate feedback, knows at once how he did and where improvement may be needed.
