I can remember the spelling bees we had in there because I was always the first to sit down. We had grades one through six with classrooms around the edge of the auditorium which was located in the center. I remember playing on the gym ropes that had big rings. I could climb clear to the top of the gym. I tucked away in heated with a steam boiler, a box for many years, has reappeared and brought back countless memories to a few of the 68 students who attended Cyprus Grade School back in 1921-2Copies of the photo, showing first and second graders along with their teachers Miss Mooney and Miss Walsh, are the prized possessions of Leo Beagley and Bill Norris, both residents of Hunter. Both have prints of their long ago class- mates. Rems together back at Cyprus Grade School, reminisces Leo, been buddies all through the years, and even worked out at Kennecott together. The two got their heads together to see how many of the class they could identify. Recess is a bright memory too. There was a store right north of the We were Blick - school. Whenever I had a penny, Id go over and buy a dumbbell allday sucker. I also remember the school bell. To ring it, you shook it like a cowbell. We had indoor plumbing and electric lights though. Ui&LHg - Wtos Htowtfiy - remember the school was a brick building, Leo recalls. It seems like it burned down in about 1941 and the present Cyprus high was built on that same spot. Bill remembers that a depression hit the area in 1921, the mill was shut down and many people I Leo commented about his memories of Miss Mooney. She was so stern, he tells. If you were tardy or absent, you went up before the class and she paddled your hands. One of Bills vivid memories was when, years later, he was coming down the hill on a steam engine were out of work. They closed the Hawthorne and Webster schools and sent all the kids to Cyprus grade school, he says. Lots of people had to leave the area because they were out of work. Leos dad drove the school .bus, but it was actually a covered wagon drawn by horses. John William Beagley would gather up the kids from the outlying areas and bring them about three miles to school and then take them home again at night. with a load of ore from the mine. Tlte Ftfic - a picture that was hanging in the hall. It was a picture of Shakespeares birthplace. As the two old friends looked over the picture, they picked out first one and then OPENERS by Dr. Jack H. Parry another of their classmates from 60 years ASTIGMATISM? Explaining astigmatism is hard to do in simple terms. Still, you should know something about it. The a in astigmatism means without, while means point. stigma Thus it is an optical system a without point of focus, or as Webster puts it, Astigmatism - A structural defect of a lens, or an eye, that prevents light rays from an object from meeting in a single focal point, so that indistinct images are formed. You will recall that by holding a magnifying glass in the sunlight the suns rays can be brought to a sharp focus. Now, imagine that lens to be elastic. If you squeezed it to make it bulge, the surface would then be shaped like the surface of a football, rather than spherical like a basketball. In this condition it would not bring the sun's rays to a sharp focus because it would have astigmatism. Astigmatism is a condition of the eye in which the rays of light are not all focused on the retina result Kout I could see the old school burning down and oh, how I wished that I was down there so I could rescue ago. in a distorted focus rather than a sharp, point focus. Higher degrees of astigmatism cause distorted and blurred vision. Smaller degrees usually cause symptoms of such as headaches, fatigue, and loss of achievement. There are many types of astigmatism and they are corrected by wear-ining eye-stra- g specially ground glasses or contact lenses. When astigmatism is corrected by glasses, things often look distorted, slanted, or out of position until the wearer becomes adapted to them. Astigmatism almost al ways undergoes slow changes necessitating yearly examinations and periodic changes in the lens pres enption to keep it accurately corrected.
