In those days, we showed dairy cattle and that was all. As time went on, businessmen in Murray were contacted for prizes to be awarded in addition to ribbons. They wanted a bigger affair, suggesting making it into a county fair. Daw as he looks over only some of the many Blue Ribbons he won in competition at "Dairy Days," the forerunner of the S.L. County - Pg. 7, 1980 3B Hall, urged that the fair not be limited to Murray residents, but that it be for the entire county. Businessmen went along with them so long as the fair would be held in Murray. Thus, the Salt Lake County Fair was organized during a June 4th meeting in 1937 and that fall, the first fair was held in the park, with no permanent structures for housing the various exhibits. We showed not only cattle, but hogs and other animals. It was much larger than the Dairy Day had been previously, Mr. Daw emphasized. I remember that Roy Hillam was in charge of the hog section and he had quite a time with those temporary pens. There were no post holes to hold the fence down, he laughs. One pig would lift the fence with his nose and the others would run underneath it. There were pigs running all over Murray! It was soon realized that more permanent structures were needed for a successful fair. Dottu Doulite Daijc Remembering his years as chairman of the Dairy Day, Mr. Daw told of raising some choice cows. His other boys, Harold, Glen and Owen, were involved in activities in the County Fair also for a number of years. I remember J. Clifford Hansen. Wasnt he the mayor of Murray? I remember he was at the meetings. Also, Chester Bello and his wife Mae w ho used to live in Hunter. There was Ray Kingston and Roene Wood. She was just a youngster at that time and is still involved in the fair. At age 88, Mr. Daw doesnt show animals anymore, but Im still pretty active.
