No doubt the mayor was frustrated - it seemed to him that residents did not want taxes increased - and probably he was right. However, as citizens we frequently send mixed messages to our legislative bodies. We usually insist on a certain level of services but we object to paying for them. It would seem that Mayor Roberts could better serve the citizens of West Jordan by remaining on the job to continue to work for a better community. He campaigned for and was elected to the position and owes the voters the remainder of the four years in office. In our opinion his departure labels him a quitter, not a protester. That the other four members of the Council did not agree with his position is their privilege and is certainly no good reason to leave office. At any rate, majority rule is a sometimes frustrating but longstanding and sacred aspect of our democratic form of government. It is obvious to anyone who has bothered 4-- -- -- none-the-le- ss THUMBS UP: a b about it that there is a great deal of frustration involved in public service. In this case we are sorry that candidate Roberts did not fully appreciate this fact when he decided to run because his departure now does not benefit the city or the many people that voted him into office. Roberts is not the first mayor to resign and probably wont be the last. Former Salt Lake Mayor Ted Wilson battles that image daily in his run for governor. He provides a ribbon cuttings and other city functions, but his voting power equals that of members of the city council. West Jordan will continue to function without Mayor Roberts and residents probably wont notice many changes. We have high expectations for public officials and we hope that prospective candidates weigh the bad with the good, the frustration with the limelight, before they decide to run for office. Independence Christmas (a lot); I find New Years Eve enjoyable. Easter is nice and Pioneer Day is fun. But July 4th ranks as my favorite. I like to see the flag displayed from homes and businesses and passing by in a parade. The National Anthem thrills my soul. Together they remind me that of all the blessings of my life, being born in this great country is number one. I like the feeling the day brings with it when I stop and reflect what it means to be an American. I enjoy the various ways we as Americans pause to celebrate. The parades,- the community events, programs, family picnics and most especially the fireworks that light up the night sky. Its a day for eating Lions Club breakfast and following it up with hamburgers, hot dogs, fried chicken, potato salad and ice cream. It should be spent with family or friends. Its not a day for staying inside and watching television. Mother Nature almost always cooperates with fair skies and theres much to do, most of it in the great - outdoors. Independence Day is not celebrated properly unless you at least sunburn your nose. I can only recount two or three July 4th celebrations that were particular high water marks in my life. Its more the overall feeling the day brings that makes me anticipate it each year. Parts of many have been spent toting a camera so this newspaper would have follow-ucoverage. Later, we would work in a Fun Day booth. But somehow there was always time for a picnic, a barbecue or a swim. As a child when fireworks were legal, I spent much of the day blowing up coffee cans, getting my p precious cache of explosives only after many warnings from my parents about the myriad dangers firecrackers. with associated There was always a family outing of some sort with Moms fried chicken and potato salad the most important aspect of the day. I do believe it has finally arrived! Summer, that is. Judging from the hot, humid, 100 degree days, it is finally here. Now, dont get me wrong. I like summer. But I dont like the temperature to go from 65 one day to 95 the next.- Somehow my body does not adjust that fast. Summer also brings critters that I dont much care for. Things such as ants, (lots of ants the past few summers and they are everywhere you go), worms in the lawn and plenty of yellow jackets or hornets whichever term you choose to use, they are plentiful. Summer also brings mosquitos even though I have yet to be attacked this early summer. - - Summer also brings sunburn, weeds in the yard, cars that overheat when you least expect them to and mowing the lawn, except this year we have some very capable young men mowing ours. Summer also brings out the hoses to water each and every inch of the yard to keep it looking decent. And summer is the time of year for the smell of ' fertilizer on your neighbors yard. Summer is also the hardest time of year to get up and go to work when there are so many other things we would rather be doing. And some people even have to go to school in the summer now that schools are a reality. But the good things that summer brings far outweigh the things. Summer is the . , year-roun- d d , time for bike riding, early morning and late evening walks, washing the car, air conditioners, camping, picnics, ice cream, popsicles, fireworks, parades, shorts on both men and women, parks, benches, swimming outdoors, water slides, waterfalls, snow capped mountains, vacations, outdoor concerts. Lagoon, fairs, outdoor theater at Sundance, trips to the mountain streams and at least one trip to Park City to ride the famous slide. Summer is' running through the sprinklers, outdoor cookouts, fishing, sleeping in the back yard in a sleeping bag so you can see the stars or sleeping in the family tent. Summer is sandals and thongs, chopped ice at whatever outlet you happen to stop at for a cool one and summer to me is ice cold Coke! Summer also brings lots of colors. The sky is so blue, the grass is green, and the flowers come in all colors and sizes. The clouds are either billowy and snow white or dark when a summer shower is coming. Summer brings rainbows in all their finery and monarch butterflys in the air. Summer brings birds who are busy feeding their young in the nest and singing to the top of their happy voices to let us all know that summer is here. Summer is visiting with neighbors over the back fence or out in the yard. Summer is great! But too soon it slips by. On the horizon is 'July' 4th, then the 24th holiday, and then it is August and time to prepare for school. Then Labor Day arrives, Halloween and then we are shopping for a Thanksgiving turkey. And then, before we know it, Christmas is in the air and creeping up on us! Where does the time go? I had better end this and go Christmas shopping before it is too late. OUR READERS WRITE made about the whole affair. The apparent lack of local media coverage on the event, a sad ingredient shared by most communities outside of Salt Lake.
