Show THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, June 9, 1988 4 Asael And Beth Wallace Reach Fiftieth Anniversary Out My Window Ethel Bradford Asael M. and Beth L. Wallace will be honored on Thursday, June 16th at an open house on the occasion of their golden wedding anniversary. The event will be hosted by It took years of pain, horror and uncountable operations before he left the hospitals and when that day came, Dax left with no eyesight, a scarred face and body, and ...no hands. comes in many guises and last two courageous people take a tremendous leap of faith. A leap into the unknown places our lives take and, in this day of "no commitment", made their they commitment for all the world to see and hear. Courage I saw Sunday I stood nearby as Randy Wells and Dax Cowart traded their wedding vows, pledging those old lovely words to love, honor and cherish. And it will be easy for you to ask, whats great about that? Every day people marry and, other than the trials and cares that come to all of us, it doesnt take any great amount of courage to do so." "Well, But there is a great difference. First, Randy and Dax are not and both have children around the bracket. And, again thats no great deal. Done all the time. teen-ager- s 20-ye- But wait a moment. Fifteen or so years ago Dax was a U.S. Air Force Jet pilot with a keen mind . . . fast reflexes . . . and the training and opportunity to use them both. His hobbies included such fun things as riding broncos and the more prosaic ones of skiing and such. Life stretched out before him in one broad path with no anxiety or worry. But then . . . in one instant . . . while he and his father were tinkering with the carburetor of a car, a leak of gas caused a terrible explosion, killing the father and leaving Dax another person. Most of his body was burned . . . face, arms and body, and his last visual image in this life was in the ambulance, seeing and hearing his dying father say, "Im so sorry, Im so sorry. " their children and grandchildren. The family is inviting friends and relatives to call between the hours of 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. at the North Jordan Stake Center at 3900 So. and 4000 West in West Cruelly, his hands were burned and locked into fists with no fingers and one small thumb. Twenty-fou- r hour assistance is needed, but, in spite of all that he now has his attorneys degree and also travels across the country lecturing, by invitation, to doctors and nurses to help them understand burn victims in ways only a burn victim could do. And Randy? Well, Randy is a nurse and a darn good one, too. She has now retired from the National Guard as a nurse . . . teaches at the University of Utah Nursing school and nurses at the Veterans Hospital. One sharp lady, let me tell you, and good boking on top of it all. ' As a matter of routine she uses video tapes of various operations and medical techniques to aid in the training of her students, and . . . wouldnt you know it??? Her hands came upon a video of Dax, showing his years of pain and torture. She was so impressed with his courage that she found how to get in touch with him, and soon one thing led to another, and so. . . so so. Last Sunday I read the Marriage Creed ... and said the prayer at their wedding assisting John Beverbigh, Doctor of Divinity. The two of them spent Saturday night at my home, and before they left I knew why Randy loved him and why he refuses to be locked in the idea that life, for him, is over. Pain, suffering and having his life turned upside down has not blunted or aborted his love of life or his courage to say 'Yes." And Randy? Well, she says, "This is what all my training has been for. To be ready for Dax. And it isnt just a labor of my profession or a feeling of duty, either. Living with and helping Dax will be my joy." ... as I said . . . comes in many Courage guises and I saw it in full flower bst Sunday. Valley City.
