Show 2 THE GREEN SHEET Thursday, April 16, 1987 Green Sheet Area Gymnasts Have Tough State Meet SOUTH JORDAN It was a rough time for Green Sheet area entries in the State Gymnastics meet held Friday and Saturday at Bingham high school as, aside from Judge of Region Six, not one was able to place a girl in the individual finals on Saturday Most did not qualify complete teams and therefore were not counted in the team competition held Friday, although all had some individuals who notched personal bests in the meet The competition at state was so tough that the low score among the top 20 competitors in the bars, vault and floor exercise was 9 0 or better, while in the beam an 8 8 was the minimum tally Judge, as mentioned, had the best outing, sending and placing three girls in Saturday's finals Natasha Montoya placed fifth in the totals with 36 9 points. Montoya also captured second in the vault with a score of 9 5 She was also eighth in the beam with a 9 15, while teammate Dawn Bonnacci was sixth at 9 25 Montoya finished ninth the in the bars at 9 2 eleventh in the floor at 9 3 Cyprus placed six gymnasts in the meet, who earned a total of 100 95 points, according to coach Pat Rasmussen Two competed in with Jennifer Booth scoring 31 65 points, including an 8 6 in the vault and an 8 2 in the floor exercise, and Tina Jensen adding a total of 30 3 points, led by a 7.95 score in the vault and a 7 6 in the beam Also competing for Cyprus, Jodi Hoopes scored 8.3 in the vault and 7 7 on the beam, Lanae Hutchinsen got an 8 05 m the vault, Keri Watson earned an 8 05 in the floor and Cami Rushton had a 6 9 in the bars. Kearns and Granger were also bunched up near Cyprus and Kearns coach Noray Neville reported that several of her team members raised their scores from the Region Three meet held the week before She singled out Jackie Parton and Simone Chadderton for their performances in the vault compettion. Neville holds a summer clinic in gymnastics and hopes to interest as many young ladies as possible, and not just those from her own team, to take part with an eye toward continuing their improvement. Granger may have well made it into the team totals and placed several gymnasts in the individual finals had not four team members failed to make grades, a bitter blow stated coach Rhondalee Anderson. I really think we couldve placed in the top six as a team, she said later. However, like Kearns, a number of of Lancer competitors showed marked improvement in their scores. Among them was Cindy Kranwinkle, who scored a 8 7 in the vault. In the standings, Sher Whitney scored an 8 2 in the floor excercise, 8 2 on the bars, 8.3 on the beam and 8 0 in the vault; sophomore Deann Booth added an 8.45 in the vault and 7 85 in the floor; Sherry Jacobson notched an 8.25 in the bars; Carrie Duncan, another sophomore, posted an 8.3 in the floor and 7.2 on the beam; and Brenda Chappell scored a 7 85 on the beam. According to Taylorsville coach Molly Cox, all but one Warrior competitor raised her scores from Region and Cox said she was very pleasedwith the effort her girls displayed. I was amazed at just how tough . the competition was at state, she added. Just getting there was a major accomplishment. Senior Lisa Cisneros missed get ting into the finals by .5 of a point, scoring an 8.3 in a solid beam routine. Valerie Cressall, raised her region score in the event by .7 of a point, scoring an 8.05. The rest also did well, considering that, save for Cisneros, all were participating in their first state meet. DONT MISS THIS BUY 3200 SPRED LATEX FLAT REG.
