Cyprus high school will be the site for tomorrows (Friday) Region Three gymnastics meet, reported Cyprus Pat coach Rasmussen. Action in the one-da- y affair will get underway at 4:30p.m. Its expected to be a wide open meet, with a number of teams bringing some top talent. Host Cyprus will be led by senior captain Jennifer Booth, the Pirates leading competitor. Booth is especially solid in the beam and floor exercise event. Also for Cyprus, senior Jodi Hoopes, the teams other captain and optional entrant, specializes in the beam and vault. Tina Jensen, another option gymnast, is expected to do well in the floor and vault, as is Lanae Hutchinson in the optional d vault and Keri Watson in the optional floor. Competiting in Class III for Cyprus will be Jacque Parker, Carla Woolslayer and Marge Olsen. Granger optional around gymnasts include Duncan, Mascke and Jacobson in the bars; Kranwinkle and Shappel in the floor; and Grant in the beam. Working in Class III for the Lady comLancers will be petitor Isom. Senior captain and optional gymnast Rita Rosenhan leads Kearns contingent, specializing in the bars and vault. Senior Andrea Foster, the other captain, should be solid in in the optional bars. Others expected to show well for the Kearns' optionals are Kely Kenney in the beam, Malinda Carlson in Clinic Will Feature Top Utah Coaches Local super heavyweight Danny Barrett spars with John Bullock of Bullock's gym in Midvale. Barrett has earned a spot PUGILISTIC PALS . . . on the regional team now involved in U.S. tionals now going on in Buffalo, New York. MIDVALE. Dan Barrett, a former of Kearns high school and a product of Bullocks Boxing Gym in Midvale, will be featured among the boxing team representing Region Nine in the 1987 U.S. Boxing Championships, March 4, in Buffalo, New York. Region Nine includes Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona. Barrett, who boxes in the super heavyweight division, has previous victories in state and regional competition under his belt. The Regionals were held March 21 at the Fairgrounds Collesium in Salt Lake. Barrett earned a nationals berth by defeating Arizonas Bob Nix. Before taking a break to play outside linebacker for Snow College and Southern Oregon State, Barrett amassed a recored of 26-- He lost his first bout after returning from football, but rebounded quickly in state and regional competition. John Bullock, who's spent some time sparing with Barrett, feels the young man can win at nationals provided he can learn how to keep punching and scoring points. Working fast and scoring points is important in amateur boxing because each bout contains only e rounds. A clean three blow, struck with the white part of the boxing glove, counts as much as a knock down. Gym owner Tony Bullock feels Barrett will do all right although the competition will be stiff. He added that the nationals can lead to the Olympics with spot on the U.S. team being the ultimate goal of those tak graduate three-minut- ing part. Barrett said that hes only returned to training in 1987. He credited his loss in a sponsored bout in January to the long layoff during which he played football. The five-danational tournament si the premier annual amateur boxing competition in the United States and features competition in the 12 y Olympic weight categories. The 12 champions will advance to the U.S. Olympic Festival in Raleight, N.C., which is serving as the American Trials. 1987 Pan The U.S. Chamionships showcase the talents of the best amateur boxers in the country. It is sponsored by the USA Amateur Boxing Federation ( USA ABF ) and is hosted by the Greater Buffalo Chamber of Commerce and the Niagara Amateur Boxing Federation. (UFCA) President Fenton Broadhead has announced that the first UFCA Spring Football Clinic will be held April at the Salt Lake Airport Hilton. The clinic will present LaVell Edwards of BYU, Jim Fassel of Utah, Utah States Chuck Shelton, Mike Price of Weber State, Jack Bishop of SUSC, U of U Athletic Director Jim Copeland, Dixies Greg Croshaw and Paul Tidwell, Snow College, as featured speakers. The clinic fee of $25 per person includes UFCA membership for 1987, Saturday lunch, a UFCA clipboard, door prizes and free soft drinks. Lisa Scott is expected to show well in the optional vault and Valarie Creesall in the optional beam. The Class III captain for Taylorsville is Pam Friel. Cyprus high school posted three tying runs in the bottom of the sixth and notched the winning run in the seventh to edge past visiting Kearns 4 Friday in Region Three baseball action. The Cougars picked up two runs in adthe top of the sixth to earn a vantage and looked to be in command. Then the Pirates launched their rally in the bottom half of the 5-- 1 inning. Paul Allen was the winning pitcher for Cyprus, striking out 12, walking two and giving up six hits and four runs. Shawn Veazie, the losing pitcher for Kearns, had six strikeouts to his credit. Cyprus cut the Cougar lead to one, with a run in the bottom of the second, Paul Allen doubling, moving to third on an out and scoring on Mike Nunnleys sacrifice. In the sixth, Kearns Brown reached on an error and scored on a single by Dunyon. Todd Funderburk then doubled in in Dunyon Cyprus half of the inning saw singles from Allen, Nunnley and Trent Dea, a triple by Argyle and three runs. The winning tally was scored in the seventh as Bill Robbs belted a two-ou- t double, Kearns gave up two walks and Dea slapped out an rbi single. Cyprus five runs were scored off 10 hits and the Pirates committed three errors. Kearns had four runs off six hits and was credited with two errors. The kids really fought back in the final two innings, stated Cyprus head coach LaRon Unk. It was a great game for us and a tough one for Kearns.
