The risk of giving birth to a child with this genetic defect increases with the mothers age. For example, a mother under the age of 30 has less than a 1 in 1,000 chance that her child will be born with Down Syndrome But a mother at age 35 has a 1 in 400 chance of bearing a baby with this genetic problem.
