Fish after a snappy-colride at Wheeler Historical Farm. Why, when I was a youngster down in Woodruff and Snow Flake, d children. There were Kalyn, Sean, Becky, Eric, Lori, Mark and Donny Chal-lis- , all children of Donald Challis and his wife Lorraine. Janet Challis Dawson also came on the sledding party with her children Jamie, Shelly, Tammy and tucked Jenin a warm basket, nie Dawson. Tom Dawson, Janets husband, is father of the Dawson children. The sleigh rides that Mr. Fish speaks about from his youth were way back at the turn of the century and before, for this very personable gentleman will be 94 years of age on March 13, 1982. The youngest member of the winter outing was Jennie Dawson, who is but two months old. There is almost 94 years difference between the oldest of the party and the youngest. The wintertime sport must hold appeal to all ages, too, because Mr. Fish tells that he thoroughly enjoyed the cold ride, and, although young Jennie couldnt say so, she seemed to be right at home snuggled down in her basket, near her mother, in the sleigh. It was quite evident by the laughter and shouts that all others on the sleigh were having a great time. Oh, my land, Mr. Fish exclaimed, I havent been sleigh riding since before I was married. And that event was on April 2, 1909. And thats a long story, Mr. Fish exclaimed when questioned about his early life. My parents lived in Snow Flake, but, you see, there just werent any doctors around then and so, when it was time for me to be born, my parents went to her mothers home in Woodruff, Arizona, and thats where I was born. old-tim- In Oh, what fun it is ride . . .' and the faces ail tell the truth of the song. 94 W. Fish, Ronald is them year behind front are Dr. and Mrs. D.W. Challis, old father of Verna (Mrs. Challis), two of their grandchildren, and the farm dog Mindy. e w fail Cham My family went back and forth from Old Mexico to Arizona when I was a kid but most of my youth was in Snow Flake and I went to school at the Church (LDS) Academy. You see there werent lots of schools around like there are now, and so the church built academies. Students came from a long way off to study there and thats where I met my wife. Her name was Susan Ann Freeman, and when we decided to get married, a friend of mine, Asel Smith and his sweetheart, along with Susan and I, took the train to Salt Lake and we were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. That was April 2, 1909. Ive spent over half my life here in Salt Lake. We moved here in August of 1930 and Susan died July 2, 1973. 1 lived alone, and got along nicely, too, but a few months ago Verna and Don talked me into coming to live with them and so now Im living right here in Murray. Doctor and Mrs. D. W. Challis have made Murray their home since 1948 at which time the doctor opened his office. So, for families who dont ski . . or dont want to ski . . . or want a change of pace ... it isnt the end of winter fun. Sleigh riding is great and the whole family can enjoy the outing ... no matter what the age. Close to 100 years of memories of how it used to be can be revived, or, as little Jennie Dawson proves, as young as two months. Youre just never too young or too old to have fun. And sleigh ridings just that. . - Koine youft UltMtuut winter, wed get out the sleigh. A bunch of us of all ages, would put a good layer of hay in the bottom of the sleigh, get plenty of blankets to wrap ourselves with, and off wed go. That horse and sleigh would go, like the old song says, over fields and meadows because by then a lot of the fences would be drifted up to the top and we could go right over the top of them. On last weeks sleigh ride, Mr. Fish brought along members of three generations of his descendants. His daughter is Verna Fish Challis and with her was her husband Dr. D. W. Challis of Murray. The next generation to enjoy the ride were children of two of the Challis The reason for this citation is because so many women put forth herculean efforts and no one, except those close to her, even guesses.
