Show r SAYS SHE by Michele Bartmess One of the longest definitions of a single word in Websters New World Dictionary is the many-faceteone attributed to the word service. d The word can be used as noun or verb and both take considerable space to explain in Websters volume. Ive been reflecting on it during the past few weeks ( The goal was to sell at least 7,200 tickets and I wont really know how successful my efforts have been until the show opens. If the seats are filled, then Ill finally be able to sit back and enjoy the experience. If not, Ill spend some time wondering why. I know the product, which is "South Pacific, is a good one. It wasnt that I was unwilling to give up the time. I kind of needed something to occupy my mind. My real concern was in swallowing my professional pride. Asking the other media in the valley to help spread the word. and its myriad meanings. Websters initial choice is to work for, as a servant or slave. Many of us feel like that in our homes or professions. Another definition deals with public employment. Ive always thought that perhaps the term public servant is a misnomer, since many of them seem to be pretty well paid for what they do. Sometimes Im not quite as adamant, however. I watched one evening last week as participants in a public hearing said some things to a group of public servants. What they said was untrue. Or at best, inaccurate. They were allowed to have their say and there was little personal reaction to the insults that were hurled at the public servants. Im not sure I could be paid well enough to endure that. At least silently. And I wasnt so sure that I wanted to have responsibility for something so important as ticket sales. No matter how good the product is, unless it is purchased, then a lot more time than that I have given will have been for something less than its potential. There is considerable pressure in this type of public service. Most of those who serve are in one way or another amateurs. We make mistakes. Often we get in one anothers way. There are misunderstandings. If the effort meets with success, however, my experience has been that those are all quickly forgotten and the real reason for serving shines through. When a job has been well done, given of self for no monetary reward, there is a warm glow of success that permeates the entire being. Such a feeling might not be possible if the effort was anything but service. Which brings us back to However, there are some public servants who abuse the title. Fortunately, with a little effort, they can be that word Three Reported Police investigated three cases involving possible illegal possession of drugs here during the week. Improvements are needed in the mobile home ordinance adopted from the county by West Valley City, commissioners were told here Thursday. Unless the ordinance is enforced or improved, residents will continue to be at the mercy of park managers and owners, according to Warren Hunt. County policy restricting the number of mobile limited home parks the bargaining position of mobile home owners and made them entirely dependent on park owners. By discouraging the number of parks, park owners have a lot of power. They can do what they want because competition is so fierce for spots, he argued. You (city commission) need to make mobile home parks appear acceptable looking and improve conditions for tenants, Hunt continued. His point was sup ported by Carroll 5 Elford, who claimed percent of West Valleys residents live in mobile homes. He recommended that one member of the City Planning Commission be a mobile home resident. This will require positive immediate action. It cant be swept under the rug, he said. Commissioner Jerry Wagstaff, who is in charge of planning and zoning matters, said hearings will be held later this year on revi- 10-1- sions in the ordinances adopted by the city. In other matters, city officials agreed to pay certification costs for 18 policemen who have not completed the POST (Police Officer Standard Training) course. Commissioner Renee Mackay estimated the training would cost the city between $750 and $1,000 per person. Its a shame the old values arent acceptable to so many of the new generation. Webster also deals with service to God. While that is a bit personal to deal with in public, I will say that I am grateful to live in a nation where such service is possible. Service has many different meanings, as you can see. Ive touched on less than half. I know from experience that service offered freely and in the classic sense of the word has its own rewards. I hope Ill always find myself willing to share whatever talents Ive been blessed with so that others lives might be enriched. Yours will be if you join us at South Pacific. The term gas station is far more honest than service station. Often when reflect on the service I receive in a restaurant, I am moved to leave the tip in writing.
