A few years ago we started this collection as an art appreciation project for the students, Mr. Humphreys said So far, the collection is from artists who are in some way significant to the school or the Farmington Kaysville area, he said. THERE ARE about nine paintings already hung in various areas of the school and they certainly take away from the drabness of the and offices halls, classrooms, he added. Mr. Humphreys said they hope to add at least one painting per year. This years selection was a gift from the Parent We Teachers Association felt it would be significant to have a painting from a former Davis High art teacher who did so much to build up the art department there, Mrs James (Ann) Hansen, retiring PTA president, said Mr Merrill joined the Davis High School faculty as a ' the art teacher in 1926 after attaining his master's degree in art education at Brigham Young University done that I wanted to do, he said So he closed the Gable House Gallery and added a small gallery onto his Tree House studio in Farmington He and his wife, Leoia Green Merrill, a dramatist, spend a lot of time traveling to places he wants to paint and visiting with other artists and art galleries where he can study the techniques of others In 1938, he became the art supervisor for the Davis County School District and then became vocational coordinator for the District in 1942 WHILE AT Davis, supervised the students well-know- n he in making all the dance cards for the school, all the scenery for the stage productions and all the advertising of the games and dances In 1939, Davis had the only art department m the state where oil painting, silk screening, frame making, sculpturing and air brushing were taught Then in 1941 a class m fashion drawing was added to the art program Because of his activity in producing scenery for the his stage productions, interest broadened into stage lighting and in 1995 he began ALTHOUGH HE is quite versatile in his artwork, he prefers painting rural scenes The son of Dr. and Mrs Amos N Merrill, he was raised on a farm in Provo, Utah and says he still has the feel for beautiful country scenes His interest in art began in junior high and he won the Edwin Evansand Eastman Art awards while m high school Some of his teachers at BYU and the University of Utah have been LeConte Stewart, business as a manufacturers agent for fixture several light his own A study course on the United States Constitution entitled The American Heritage and The Constitution will begin in Davis County on Sept 12.
