THEY MAY well be. Three starters of their flayers were on Val Cullimores club that made their first-eve- r trip into a state baseball tournament including the ace of the pitching staff and a couple of outfielders. EVERY CLUB has a stopper on the mound, the one pitcher who usually wins, or who can put out a fire in a hurry and the Woods Cross club is no exception. Turning into one of the finest pitchers in the area is Dave Draper who this past high school season posted a great record against the big boys. Remember too the fact that Dave was just a sophomore and still growing. Last year m their inaugural event the tournament attracted all of the best players from the state plus a few from out of Utah and all have expressed their intention to return this year. One of the reasons for the success of the toumame nt is the three course format Play will be conducted on the Bountiful city course, Davis Wien the Brigham City open was dropped from the schedule we got this tournament put on From this idea one of the best tournaments on the Ltah schedule Was bom and Valley View. Usually a tournament is held for three days on the same course but this three course format tends to intrigue the Park golfers THE IDEA for the event was the brainstorm of Scott Whittaker, now the professional at Bountiful city A few years ago, while dn as- sistant at ano'her course, Scott wanted to have the tournament on the Davis and Valley View courses, then when Bountiful opened up and he was mdde hedd man, he went to work trying to line up the event Li LAST YEAR the winner was an amateur, which didnt make the professionals look too good and they are out to win it this year, Bob Bradbury Hell be buk Other top amateurs who have registered already include Vance Christiansen and Mike Bonch, who are both competing in the NCAA championships for Weber State Locals Doug Ohlson, from the University of Utah for the OUTFIELDERS played some varsity ball, which gives them a trio of experienced ball players roaming the fields. Another pitcher with some experience from high school is Todd Ballif, who also puts in some time at first base. Catching duties are handled by Terren Hallows who Coach Cullimore feels will become a good receiver in time. 5 members of the team include Bruce Bucks-ton- , who either catches or OTHER plays the outfield, Sam Rus- sell an outfielder, Ricky Whittaker, Tom Clay and Wes Johnson who are and Kevin Nitzel and Brad Gurr who both pitch. Coaching the youngsters during the summer are Val Cullimore, Clyde Jdckson and Mark Cullimore. IN THE annual game at Ogden, in which the players selected are named as several schools in All-St- e, the county saw their top players involved Bountiful, Clearfield, Viewmont and Davis all had at least one of their players participate in the game. Since the game is for seniors only, the Woods Cross school didnt qualify their players but they did have three of them selected to the Region Four club. 2-- 2 BOY CABPET CLEA1RS Over 20 Yrs. If they did then schools like Layton and Clearfield could join the race It's ridiculous to have Clearfield travel out to Jordan to play ball but if the league were here in the county then Che travel would be cut aown There are plenty of officials ip the Davis County area that could work the ballgames.
