STORE For the first time in Utah history, 14 Catholic married men will begin administering the sacrament of baptism, - witnessing marriages, preaching in Catholic churches and performing other religious and sacramental functions heretofore done mostly by priests. THEY RECEIVED the necessary sacramental power and authority when they wei -ordained Permanent Deacons by the Most Rev. Joseph L. Federal, Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, which includes all of Utah, in the Cathedral of the Madeleine, on Sunday, December 26, The ordination ceremony took place during a Mass on the traditional feast of St. Stephen, Deacon and first Christian martyr. It marked the first Permanent Diaconate ordination in the history of the Diocese of Salt Lake City, said the Rev. John J. Director of the Permanent Diaconate Program. THE DEACONS will be empowered to administer baptism, perform marriages, - Hed-derma- officiate at funerals, distribute Holy Communion, preach, give instructions in the Catholic Faith and engage in various forms of charitable work to the aged, sick and needy. The Permanent Deacon is one of the degrees of the Sacrament of Holy Orders; other degrees are priest and bishop, said Father Hedder-maThey will remain as Deacons permanently and not n. become priests and bishops. Their ministry as Permanent Deacons will be on a part-tim- e basis; they will continue working at their present jobs after ordination. THE ORDER of Deacon has been present in Chris- tianity since the early Church, Father Hedderman The term itself explained. means servant or helper and can be found in a number of places in the New Testament. The classic reference is Acts 6:1-- 7 where seven men were selected to fulfill a ministry of service for the Christian community. As the centuries went by, the Diaconate as a permanent office fell into disuse and was discontinued about the year 1000. From that time until 1965 when it was restored by the Second Vatican Council, it was only a step toward eventual ordination to the priesthood. Programs of training were begun in 1968 and presently there are over 1200 Permanent Deacons in the United States but none in Utah until now. THE WIVES of Permanent Deacons must give their consent for their husbands to be ordained, Father Hedderman reported. Since the committment and the ministry of the Permanent Deacon will substantially affect his wife and family, it is important that his wife give her approval. In addition to expressing consent, the wives also had a part in the ordination ceremony of December 26th. They accompanied their hus- - bands in the procession and later pinned a symbol of the diaconal office on their d husbands. newly-ordaine- teen Permanent Deacons was the culmination of two years of intensive training and formation.
