Anyone who's ever said 'That, won't happen at my school" will stand corrected. It was July 13. 1 993 af a grievance hearing with Mark Duong and Tuan Nguyen in the Shepherd Union Building when Duong pulled out a .22-caliber handgun and began firing. Duong died in an exchange of bullets with WSU police officer Kent Kiernan. When all the bullets had been fired, one was dead and four others were injured. Rumors about the incident circled around the campus for weeks. Ice Sheet. It was April 2 of 1994 when the Ice Sheet, an Olympic ice skating rink, opened. The rink, which took one year to build, was built with the 2002 Olympics in mind. Since its opening, the Ice Sheet has been home to WSU hockey club games, Utah State University hockey games, high school games and the 2000 U.S. Curling Championships.Accreditation in danger. After fighting to receive accreditation to become a university, WSU was nearly put on "probation status" because the Stewart Library wasn't up to the standard that needed to be met by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges in 1996. The library did have its accreditation reaffirmed in early 1997 after NASC's governing body stated that WSU had made acceptable progress toward meeting the general recommendations. Quarters to semesters. In continuing with current trends of university's throughout the nation, WSU switched from its quarter school schedule to a semester schedule in 1998. A Cinderella story. Four years after the men's basketball team upset the 3rd-seeded Michigan State Spartans in the NCAA tournament in 1995, the Wildcats again did "the impossible" by beating arguably the mast storied basketball program in the land, the 3rd-seeded North Carolina Tarheels 76-74 in 1999. Led by Harold "The Show" Arceneaux's 36 points, the 'Cats victory marked the first time UNC lost a first round tournament game in 19 years. The 'Cats would lose in overtime to the University of Florida in the next round. This was also the last game coached by men's basketball coach Ron Abegglan. Election invalid. After Rogue Manzanares, government relations director and elections chairman, received a barrage of phone calls from students stating they could not vote in the 1999 student government elections, he got suspicious. He was even more suspicious when he saw that 200 to 400 votes had been cast between 8 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. Friday. The election, conducted online for the first time, was declared invalid and a paper-ballot election was later conducted. Andrew Clay Shafer, a student body president candidate in 1999, would later plead guilty to criminal mischief for his involvement in the scam. Matt "The Cat." WSU's beloved mascot Matt Maw was no longer tumbling after attempting a triple back tuck and landing on his neck. Maw, one of the world's top tumblers, hoped to compete in the Olympics someday. 'i Maw would receive support from fundraising drives, Frank Layden and, Superman himself, Christopher Reeve. u u i ii Miiia iiriiiliii i 'lfffi iM i onvocations Former Utah Sen.
