The question of ethics and honesty was also discussed by the board. Don E. Gardner, chief information officer at WSU, said, "To some extent the ethics issues are no different than issues we have to deal with in a different way right now." Having a computer involved does not change the issues, but it can enhance certain aspects of what is going on in traditional classes. WSU Online not designed to take over traditional teaching style By Andrea Boyctte news writer-Signpost , The coming of WSU Online and subsequent classes offered for college credit over the Internet raises questions about student anxiety. "Any time you're in a period of history where things are shifty, it's uncomfortable," said Kathryn L. Payne, associate professor of library science. Dolly Samson, chairwoman of information systems and technology, has seen this anxiety. She notices a higher dropout rate in her information systems and technol-ogy'course, which is conducted almost exclusively over the Internet, than in other traditional classes. "A lot of students come into the class not feeling really comfortable with technology," Samson said. To familiarize her students with the technology needed for the course, which is required for all business majors who are not information and technology majors, Nothing Improves A Finger Like A Columbia Diamond Ring The music of love is heard when a Columbia Ring is placed on your finger. Many students, however, may not need formal instruction on how to use the Internet. - "To a large degree I think we're banking on not having to teach students these things," said Alan Livingston, director of Communication Arts and Technologies. Some people on campus, like Payne, see a need to educate students about how to use technology. Payne said the library may be "the last place for people to leam how to navigate and use information in an increasingly information and computer-based society." Samson said students who do use the Internet for classwork in her course are pleased, and a couple of students have changed their emphasis to include information technology after taking the class. CATS Multimedia Producer Roy Stock said 90 percent of his students perceived technology as a means of communicating and learning in a positive way after finishing the class. Members of WSU faculty are hesitant to use the Internet, because CAB Vice Chair Family Programs Chair Off-Broadway Chair Special Events Chair Super Events Chair Cinema Chair Cultural Affairs Chair The Lair Chair Arts & Exhibits Chair GamesRec. Chair they want to make sure the students still learn the subject matter, according to Stock. "Not everyone wants to learn using technology. Some people want to do it one on one." A difference in learning styles of students will always exist, Payne said. "There'll always be people who prefer to be in a room with teachers there," she said. Livingston said some faculty are really threatened by it. He added, "There are a small number of people who are really excited about it and want to participate. The response in the past three years has been amazing." . As WSU Online expands it will not replace on-campus courses. "We're not talking about the end of the 'traditional way' of educating," Peg Wherry, director of distance learning and continuing education, said. "We're talking about expanding in ways to reach more people."
