Show 6B Signpost Sports Supplement-Wednesday, May 4, 1988 Mountain biking provides great view with workout Donna Green Staff Reporter Mountain bike your bright summer afternoons away in the excellent and beautiful terrain of several local areas. Within a mere four to six hour southern bound drive of Ogdcn, one can find miles and miles of scenic trails stretching from the red rocks of Southern Utah to the mountains of southeastern Idaho and southwestern Wyoming. All of the areas have roads and trails for both the beginning, intermediate and expert riders. One such specific one-day road trip is the slick rock canyon area of Moab, Utah. There are several trails available to riders in the Moab area but two specific off-road tracks are readily suggested by the Rim Bicycling Shop in Moab which are the Slick Rock trail located west of the Moab landfill and the Indian Creek section of Canyonlands National Park. The Slick Rock trail follows the rim of the Green River while Indian Creek offers the backdrop of the beautiful local Canyonlands. The experienced Southern Utah rider is continually reminded that the rugged and unforgiving landscape of Moab is not the place to bring an inexperienced rider. The Weber State Recreation Center is sponsoring a new spring fling in the Slick Rock trails and will be making pre plans at an open meeting May 5 at 10:30 in the Union Building room 325. For the less experienced more scenic minded rider there is the close-to-home Monte Cristo area located at the head of South Fork Canyon. There are two relatively easy rides that begin at Monte Cristo and wind around to the Bear Lake and Hardware Ranch areas. The first is the Curtis Creek road which leads beyond the summit of the Monte Cristo road. The second is the Ant's Flat road which twists and turns to the state elk preserve in Blacksmith's Fork Canyon. Another neighboring road follows the irrigation canal above the bench between North Ogdcn and Brigham City. This trail provides access to the Rocky Point Reception Hall. Two area tours are scheduled for May starting with the Trappers Loop Mountain Bike Tour May 8th beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Hermitage and the Ben Lomond Tour May 29th. at 10:00 a.m. at the Mount Ogdcn Divide. The Zion Cedar Breaks Loop is another state mountain bike heaven for the avid week-long ride enthusiast. The entire trail consists of 160 miles and 20,000 feet of beautiful uninhabited terrain. For the more experienced rider there is always the drive to Malta, Idaho to face the rock formations of the City of Rocks. There are two prevailing trails in the area that offer the combination of beautiful scenery and rugged terrain. The first road follows the East Fork of the Salmon River and the second follows the Gray River that flows into Palisades Reservoir outside of Alpine, Wyoming. Just think of the self-satisfied drive home. Bingham GRAND OPENING SALE 19, 20, 21 gJr I VUARNET."
