The purpose of the meeting will be to write a constitution and set up committees for the new organization. Representatives of community, high school and college Chicano groups will be participating in the-meeting, including - WSC's Los Estudiantes Unidos and the SOCIO group from Ogden. The meeting is coming about as a result of the recent Ben Lomond Chicano Clan Assembly which drew groups from across the state. Ogden's Mayor Dirks was also at the meeting. The assembly decided that one central organization was needed to take care of the problems that are facing Chicano people in Utah. The organization will have divisions for college and high school groups. A "junta" is being set up for the colleges and a "Congresso" for the high schools. Box 598, Provo, Utah $3,000 for conference The combined Executive Councils passed a motion to appropriate $3,000 for this summer's leadership conference. The vote was 6-4. The motion originally failed to pass due to a 5-5 tie vote, but Academic vice president Jon Bingham then changed his vote to support the motion, with the stipulation that he may bring the issue up for reconsideration. The. Council had earier defeated an amendment to limit the appropriation ta $1,200. As it was passed, next year's studentbody president Kyle Matson was given the ok to use the full $3,000 that he requested, but on the condition that he invite at least 100 students rather than the 48 that he planned on. Oppone'nts of the proposal suggested that some students who would be invited would not be able to attend as they hold jobs during the summer. There was also some objection to holding the Conference out of state. The purpose of the conference is to give next' year's student leaders (various club and fraternity presidents, committee chairmen and members) a chance to get to know each other and to learn aspects of leadership. The council feels that the conference is necessary to have effectve student leadership next year. |
