Show Sept. 27, 1974 Signpost Page 13 WSC bdcfivoeSd promises bevver results tfhis yer Second year head football coach Dick Gwinn has greeted 22 returning lettermen to the 1974 version of the Weber State College football team. Several new faces dot the Wildcat lineup this year, most notably in the offensive backfield. Junior Ross Goddard, a 6-0, 175-pound quarterback has edged out last year's impressive freshman Rod Bockwoldt for the starting spot. Kermit Musseau, a junior college transfer from Lynwood, Washington is the third Wildcat signal caller. This should give WSC much needed strength at the position, as last year they opened the season with a tight end at the quarterback slot. Don Reddic, hailing from Las Vegas, Nevada, has taken over the starting tailback spot from last year's all-conference performer Brian Gladwell. Glad-well, a former Bonneville High star, had suffered an injured knee and Reddic stepped in and took the job away. Fullback slot The fullback slot is shared between 205-pound junior Rocky Whan and return letterman Chad Drecksel for the 'Cats. Whan and Drecksel are tough runners and blockers and complement Red-die's 4.4 speed in the 40. Along the line, WSC will again be outweighted and outsized in most games, but not as extreme as last year. New players have in in U (Pk creased the size and strength of the team, and returning men have "beefed up" through extensive weight training during the summer. The center position is held by Les Smith (6-3, 235), a three-year letterman out of Brigham City. At right guard was Ted Bellinger (6-1, 221), another three-year letterman, twice selected as Player of the Week in the Big Sky last year. However, Bellinger suffered a knee injury against Nevada-Las Vegas and will be out for the season . Freshman Steve Kelly (6-2, 239), a high school All-America out of Judge Memorial High School and senior Randy Gangwer have taken over the guard positions. Parker back Luther Parker (6-2, 239), out much of last year with a neck injury, and Paul Poole (6-4,231), a castoff from last year's defense, man the tackle spots. Other players who should see considerable action along the line are Mark Sosnowski, at 6-7 the tallest on the squad, Kip Hunter, Kim Bishop, Tom Villani and Neil Quilter. Dave Wheeler, who had tried out with the Green Bay Packers this summer, left a big hole to fill at tight end. Jim Hinckle and freshman Vern Jackson are battling for that spot. At the ends, Steve Fishburn, an Ogden High product, has BKaVM AW 3AQ1 311X11 V taken over one spot while Gary Childress, highly touted by the coaches, is the Wildcat split end. 'Cat Defense Eight lettermen, two redshirts and a high school all-stater form the backbone of the 'Cat defense. Dave Benson (6-3, 223), an all-conference end in 1973, has nailed down one spot and Lonnie White, who redshirted last year, has the other end position. Tackles are Bill Norton (235) and Lorenzo Townsend (238), who is only a sophomore but started some last year. Georgre De la Torre edged out Steve Parr for the middle guard position. Other linemen Backup linemen are Dan and Dean Hales, twins from Davis High, Bob Aston and Mark Hull. Linebacker looks to be the toughest spot for WSC. Dean Askew (210) and Walt Hayes, a returning sophomore letterman, appear to have two of the spots locked up at this time. The third spot has been taken over by freshman Cam McKnight. Finally, in the backfield, the 'Cats have perhaps their strongest suit. Dave Gray, Tony Glavin, former Bonneville High star Orin Trussell and Percy Devine are all returning lettermen.Other backs include two-year letterman Marzell Fairman and Ralph Parish, who also punts for the Wildcats.
