Show May 21, 1954 SIGNPOST Pa e 3 run SJETDV A Toast To Sports By MARILYN ARNOLD The deadline for the Signpost-is today, and I still don't have my assigned feature story written, so I will repeat the same old toast that I gave at the W.A.A. banquet. Those who were there can either suffer through it again or kindly read some place else. Here goes . . . The major sports I'm dealing with And volleyball is first. A disconnected punching bag is That game at its worst. We sock the ball with doubled fist And hope with all our might That it will land on someone's head 'Cause how we love to fight! "Against the rules," the ref will yell, And then she starts to run. We won't allow dumb referees And rules to spoil our fun. The two teams hate each other so A net is stretched between, This prevents all bloodshed And keeps the gym floor clean. Now basketball's a silly game But one we love to play. It's just a complicated Game of keep-away. The game's begun, the ball's in play The ref is on the go. Then as our team's first shot is made We hear the whistle blow. We look around and we are mad, It makes us want to cuss, Because that stupid referee Has called a foul on us. So now we're back in play once more This time we're on the beam; But then the whistle's blown aeajn, A foul against our team. We start to play, the whistle blows, I'd, like to run and hide; For once again a foul is called Against our blasted side. The game goes on this same old way Until the end is reached And by this time I'd like to see The referee impeached. But even though we lost the game We will not stamp and howl, Because we know to make us win, We must learn not to foul. After playing softball I've been told You'll never be the same But what's a broken leg or two It's all in the game. The girl who lost her glasses Always acts as umpire too, Can't see the hand before her face Much less the ball or you. You're up to bat, a ball comes in You swing with happy glee, You think you've hit a homer, But the umpire says strike three. It's hard to catch with those old mitts The balls just go right through. Right in the middle of every one Is a hole, I'd swear it's true. Don't get me wrong, I love all sports But play them, not again. Henceforth and forever more I'll sit and watch, amen. Ph oenix Another big forthcoming event for Phoenix is the annual farewell banquet on May 29. The meal will be served banquet style, and later in the evening there will be dancing. This event is scheduled to be held at the Ben Lomond Hotel. It is the last get-togelher be' ween the Sophomores and the Freshmen.Wednesday, L. We had another party. El Char-ro again, and boy was the food good! The Spanish speaking class collaborated with the Spanish culture class and we literally zoomed (Dave Felt) to Salt Lake. ' Mr. Hancock, who is usually the scavenger, ate before he came so we had to finish our own supper. Afterwards we split up and went to shows or came home. The kids in Ron Ingalls' car didn't get home until four. What did you do in ihe drive-in, Ronald? A party is being planned in the near future for another evening of eating.
