Show Coach Sark Red Shirted Wildcat Coach Sark Ar-slanian felt pretty lucky last Saturday night after his Weber State football By RICK HASSETT Signpost Sports Editor Hello there fellow draft-dodgers. Welcome to the wackiest sports column in the country. At least I hope it will be. The rest of the writing in the sports section will be on a dignified level, but in this column I'm going to let go. If I think a coach, a team, an official, or a program or lack of one deserves criticism, then I'll criticize. But if something is praiseworthy, then I'll throw a few verbal flowers. OK? This corner, I hope, will represent the true feelings of the student body. That is why letters are welcomed from Wildcat fans and Wildcat haters. They'llbeprint-ed if they have something constructive to say. But if you can't think of anything constructive to say, that's all right. We're desperate--we'll take anything. As the year progresses, we're planning to have some guest columnists from schools in Utah and the Big Sky Conference. Our stuff will probably run in their papers too. I know it will be hard, but I'll try to appeal to the masses with a wide variety of materiallike sex, football cheating scandals, cheerleader measurements, how to get free tickets to the ball games, etc. Shucks, I may be conservative when it comes to politics, but sports? Liberal, man, liberal. Now, for the serious part. The football season is underway, and the Purple and White have a hard-earned victory under their belts. It was certainly hard-earned, because the Wildcats didn't win it by far. In case you didn't know, that's the best way to tell if a victory is hard-earned. Just thought you'd like to know. Weber displayed a poor passing game against the Lumberjacks, but it wasn't so much Jones' aerials as it was the patterns the Cats were trying. Jones was going for the long bomb on occasion when his men weren't open. A few shorter tosses to guys in the clear would have certainly helped. I'm sure, however, that Jones will come up with a better attack tomorrow afternoon. He has all the makings of greatness as a quarterback, after a few wrinkles are ironed out. Besides, it was only the first game of the year and fans can't expect too much that early in the season. Sark himself said his teams usually don't click until about the fourth game. They clicked enough to win, and that's what counts. The brilliant running of Henry Owens, of course, was a highlight of the game. It always is. I can't remember a game since my and Hank's secondary school days that he didn't score at least one touchdown in. There were naturally some good defensive plays on Weber's part, but as the old adage goes, "The offense wins the headlines, the defense wins the games." And wouldn't you know it, I'm an old headline-writer from way back. We'll do our best, though, to give Weber State's fine defensive crew a laurel or two when it's fitting. Gee, doesn't that just sort of get you right here. Well, now that we're properly acquainted, stick around in the weeks to come when I'm a little better organized. Is it a deal? See you at the game tomorrow. Well, since it's in Billings, maybe we won't. Arslanian was wearing the same lucky red shirt during the game which he has worn for the past two years at his games. Hehas now won 24 out of his last 25 games and in all those contests Sark was wearing his bright red shirt. Only once did he fail to wear the shirt and that was last year when Snow College defeated Dixie to hand him his only defeatinmore than two years. Arslanian said that , his Dixie kids on the Weber State team were elated when he appeared in the red shirt just before the game. Coach Sark plans to wear the red shirt for every game and when it wears out, he will get another just like it.
