"It seemed a shame, all those deserted houses and all, that no one had thought of visiting one to sit around and tell a few good ghost stories," remarked Jack Suttlemyre when asked how the whole thing started, "so I went down to a store and bought a flashlight and went back to the hotel and asked if anyone wanted to visit a haunted house that night. I soon found I had picked a very good subject. About ten people said they thought it would be fun, so I gotthe bright idea to go down and . rig the place and also to find a good house where there might be some benches."I asked Lindsay Curtis, my roommate, if he would help me. We found this old school house about three blocks away from the hotel. It was just perfect; three stories high with a bell tower, few windows broken out, and large rooms with little holes and closets kind of like secretpassages. We cleaned up the chairs, arranged them in a circle, and left. "That night everything went just like planned except instead of ten people we had about 50. Lindsay went down to the building first and waited for us. During the stories he hid downstairs and kept rolling bottles or something across the floor. A lot of the girls got scared. Finally, in a real tense part ofa story, Lindsay came running into the room screaming and really scared everyone. I think some of the girls started crying. Anyway, we decided to go back to the hotel because it was cold and some of the girls were scared to stay any longer." Lindsay Curtis explained the first return like this. "We returned to the hotel and saw Mike McNally, Dean Stokes, and they said they had missed the first trip and they wanted to go back and take Cathy Clay and Nancy Wilson through the house. They asked usto go back with them and we agreed to meet them back down in the house. As Mike wanted to take his car, he also took a candle so they could go on in when they got there. They left and we went to put on warmer coats, then headed back to the house. "Apparently Mike never stayed very long because when we arrived his car wasn't there. Sowedecided to return to the hotel. We went in and Mike, Dean, Cathy, and Nancy were all upset. The girls were crying and Mike and Dean looked as though they had' seen a ghost. Mike McNally explained his short stay at the house naunted House visited by leaders at Pork City this way. "Well, it's because we had Nancy with us. She has backtrouble, ayel-low streak. When we first went up to the window to climb into the house, (the . only way to get in was through a rear window in the building, we heard somebody running away. We went on in and lit this candle and it created a weird flickering light. Garrbage, this scared us. Dean was being real funny. He thought this whole thing was a joke. The girls talked us into leaving before we went upstairs and explored the second floor. We left the building and went around to the front. Suddenly Nancy grabbed my arm and about pulled it out of the socket. Both girls were screaming, 'there's a man in the window.' We jumped in the car and drove like crazy back to the hotel. Flip, I was scared." Mike said he never saw the man but Dean had. So in asking Dean what he saw and heard we get this story. "Like Mike said, I thought it was a joke until we went back outside and I saw this guy in the window. He had on wiat looked like an old dark coat and. his tie was hanging out. He was just standing there with'his.f hands down at his sides. He;.' : was in the top window 'just'' looking at us. I couldn't see "; his face. The next thing I knew Cathy was in theback seat of Mike's car shaking, and she had big tears in her eyes. I usually don't get scared but, when I looked up and saw this guy looking at us, I was scared. I had cold chills running up my spine. I mean, just a guy standing in a window doesn't scare me. This night was kind of different. There was a bug full moon and the way this old building set back into the hill with all those trees and things, it really looked scary. Then, too, I can't Wt ' ) stop thinking about what might have happened if we had gone on up to the second floor. Just the fact that we were in there with him, that's what scares me. " Everything requires witnesses, so 'your humble reporter asked Cathy Clay what she saw and heard. "I was really excited about the whole thing; going to an old haunted house to tell ghost stories is something unusual and different. My excitement continued until I saw the house. It was just too much. Nancy andlwere sort of talked into going in. I wasn't really scared because Mike and Dean were playing around. It was when we were walking around, to the front of the house 7and glanced up to take a last look, fear really gripped me. I saw a man standing in the second story window. I was looking at him; the next thing I remember I was in the back of Mike's car with the doors locked and Mike and Dean were still on the outside. All I can say for sure, and I would stake my life on it, is that there was a man or something standing in that window looking at us and I was really scared." I Nancy Wilson also agreed that th e r e was ; s o m e o n e f n t h e w i h d o w a n d 'it really scared ..her, In i; fact, she "was ;so ' scared ' that when this small brave group returned to the hotel to gather forces to go back and find out who, what, and why, Nancy agreed on who, was to go back, but she would not enter that haunted house again "That first look was enough for me. I knew there was a man in there and no one was going to change my mind. I agreed to stay outside with the rest of the chickens and wait for his return to the second story window. I really got scared when I heard a scream from within the house and all of the dogs in Leadership Conference Park City began to bark. "It didn't seem long before everyone was out of the house and headed back to the safety and security of the hotel. Boy, it was one night I will never forget."Also remaining outside was Jay Gardner. He said he would stay outside with the girls in case they should become scared. Jay said the whole thing was kind of funny because "about all you could hear was McNally in there trying to keep everyone quiet, and yelling 'I know you are in there, you rat fink, come out.' Jay also said he watched the building to try to keep tabs on where the group was in the building. He also reported hearing two loud crashing sounds about four minutes apart, the first sounding like something falling downstairs and the second like someone falling through the top floor. Both sounds were different. When asked if he was scared, Jay replied, "No, but there are some things that happened that I can't explain. " Student body President Tex Bourland was also in the group who went back into the house so I asked him about these strange noises. "Some of it we have an explanation for, but a couple of things we haven't. We can't, for example, explain the first noise. We were all standing at the bottom of the stairs being real quiet, when suddenly this bucket of bolts and rocks came flying down the stairs at us. Mike froze for about a second then he raced to the top of the stairs to catch whoever had thrown them down at us. But, it was real quiet except for Mike pounding on the walls and things with this big club he carried all through the house. He was yelling, 'Rat fink, come on out. 'Another thing we can't figure out is Letters To The Editor Dear Editor, At the outset of a new school year it is only natural for most people, both students and faculty, to consider the benefits that they receive from being associated with Weber State. May I suggest that we would all be better off if some of this time were spent in considering how we may best be. of service to our school. We need more people who are willing to give as well as receive. P articipation in campus activities is.amust for full realization of college life. On every campus you find those who think that criticism is a necessary part of "higher education" and so they spend much of their time criticizing just for the sake of criticism. In my opinion this is not part of building a better Weber. This is not to say that criticism is of no value, but only to stress caution before' waving the flag of criticism. It may be worthwhile to ask ourselves this question, "Do I have a solution, or am I part of the problem?" As aStudentBodyOfficer I would like to take this opportunity to invite every student to bring his problems and suggestions to the appropriate people in student government. Many of the serious problems on the Berkeley campjus could have been avoided had the students gone to student government first. We realize thatproblems will arise at Weber, but we trust that students will use the offices of student government to find solutions. All meetings of the Senate are open to the student body, if any student or faculty member would like to speak in a Senate meeting, he is welcome to do so. Contact the student body secretary to be given time on the agenda. It should also be noted that every classis represented on the Senate and that class officers will be more than happy to help you any way they can. KENT BULKEY, First Vice Pres. who locked Ann in this little room. We can explain the second noise; it was Jack kicking down the door so they could get out. I don't know. Something was certainly funny down there and I don't believe I want to go back and find out whether or not it's haunted." Ann Thomas explained her experience this way. "It was horrible, all those noises and people moving around in the dark. And I kept falling in all these holes in the floor. What really scared me was I kept thinking about how many bugs and rats and things like that, were in there." Asked if anything strange happened to her during her stay in the house Ann replied: "Somebody or thing locked me in this old bell tower and it really panicked me to think I might have to spend the night in this old Continued on Page 23 |
