Show January 22, 1965 SIGNPOST Page 11 g&m men mi&& A Hop, Skip, and a Juma from Campus We'll See You The most crucial road trip of the year lies ahead of the winning Wildcats of Weber State College this weekend and the outcome of two games with Montana and Montana State could make or break the Cats title hopes. Friday night Weber State invades the Missoula team in an attempt to gain an initial victory over the Grizzlies. A Montana bear-hide has escaped the Wildcats the past two years in Missoula since the series began and Montana won its' only Big Sky game last year at the expense of Weber State 74-62. It will be difficult not to look past Montana to the Montana State game on Saturday night in Bozeman. The Grizzlies are 0-4 in league play so far, and the Bobcats are the defending champs with a 2-1 mark in the young league season. While the Montana State Weber State clash will take the headlines on Saturda.' night, the Friday night encounter with Montana must be con sidered first. Montana has bolstered their squad this year in every position and were expected to challenge for the BSC title this year, however they lost a couple of close league games and are presently on the bottom of the six team league with an 0-4 mark. The Grizzlies "new blood" include five JC transfers and three promising sophomores. Newcomers Tom Schilke, 6' 10" center, and Ed Sam-elton, 6'3" forward, and Wade Hughes 6'3" guard have been looking good thus far, however Schilke has missed a few games with an injury. 68 Bob Drew wno became eligible this quarter adds height to the Montana front line. The Silvertios put together an excellent game against defending champs Montana State two weeks ago before losing a 76-74 overtime game in Missoula. In fact the Missoula men have been getting tougher and tougher on their own home court in the last two or three games. Samelton is the lead ing Grizzly scorer with 17 points per game followed by Hughes with 10. Hughes is a good shooter with over 50 percent of his shots falling throught the ring. Weber State will hope to snoot better than they did last year in Missoula. The Cats lirea a ingia 26 percent for their poorest performance of the year. The Wild- pats will take a 12-1 record to Montana for the two conference games and before leaving the big Sky country will tangle with eastern Montana in Billings next Monday night. Cat opponents will have six we- ber State cagers to worry about. Gene Visscher, the 6'6 center from Michigan is the leading scorer with 18.9 ppg and 11 rebounds per contest. He is followed by Jerry Trice, the 6'3 all-conference guard with 18.1, John Silbernagei with 13.1, Eddie Tillman, with 11.2, Greg Harrop with 10.8, and Bob Belka with 9.9. Reserves Frank Hitchens with 3.7 and Al Palfreyman with 3.2 also can offer some problems to opponents. The. Wildcats are leading the Big Sky conference in total offense and defense, averging 88.5 ppg in two games, and allowing only 63 ppg on defense. (Prior to last weekend games) Jerry Trice is the leading scorer with 21.5 ppg. (prior to last weekend game) Overall the Wildcats are hitting j. 8 ppg and allowing opponents onlv 68.7 ppg for a 20 point bulge over each of 13 opponents. Coach Dick Motta knows that a double loss could certainly dam pen the title hopes of the Wild cats and a double win would stamp the Ogden team as a favorite for the crown, but a split in the two game weekend would keep the Wildcats still in contention for league honors. Weber State has won four out of five road games this year, but have not faced as stiff a competition as will be found in Montana and Montana State this weekend. Weber State's lone loss was on the road against Wyoming 75-89 and the Cowboys are in the running for the WAC title. The Wildcats will leave Thursday for an evening workout in Missoula, play Montana Friday night and leave for Bozeman right after the game to avoid a possible rough air trip on Saturday. Weber State plays Montana State Saturday night, leaves Bozeman Sunday for Billings, and plays Eastern Montana Monday night. The team will leave after the EM game and arrive back in Ogden early Tuesday morning. I 4 ' " X- I I -' ' J f i l j if I . S ..'' ) X f I -Sf i HEY KIDS! . . .
