Show December 6, 1963 SIGNPOST Page 3 LITTLE MAN ON CAMPUS Nielli VSC Arena Theatre Slates 'Playboy' Success Weber State Theatre's presentation of the famed Irish comedy, THE PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD, opened December 3 in the Moench Arena Theatre to the applause and laughter of a fascinated audience. John Millington Synge, who created the colorful characters of Christy Mahon, Pegeen Mike, Widow Quin, Shawn Keogh, and Michael Flarety, depicted in his play unusual Irish peasant life completely unaware of the challenge it would someday present to the competent Weber State Theatre players under the direction of John M. Elzey; and of the close parallel it draws to the modern values of mankind. Other fine representations of Irish countryfolk were done by Nancy Cheney, Sally Todd, Andrea Rees, Roger Chris-tofferson, Craig Gilbert, Robert Balken, and Tamara Bailey. Since Arena Theatre acting is much more intimate than proscenium stage acting, the scenery and the acting must be unusually realistic. This realism was accomplished, thus the mood and high level of good theatre was well represented in Weber State Theatre's first Arena pro- Nickerson Band Director Plays Baseball Mr. Erickson, director of the school band, has a background in athletics and music. He was an excellent athlete. As evidence of this, when he was in junior high school he was state tennis champion. In 1946 and 1947, he was the all-around senior athlete at Snow College, and was also All-Conference Junior College center in basketball. The BYU tennis team won each year of the three years Mr. Erickson was on their team. He was offered a chance to pitch baseball for a branch of the St. Louis Cardinals. The first year he taught it was as an athletic coach. Mr. Erickson was also quite active in music all thi-ough school. He also played in the Army Band during WWII and traveled a lot with the band. He has taught in the Sevier School District, and in the Granite School District at Olympus High School. When he directed the Olympus High School Band it was chosen to represent Utah at the Western Division of the Music Educators National Conference in California. He is a member of the Music Educators Board, and for the last 10 years has played professionally in dance or show bands in Salt Lake City. This year Mr. Erickson has been asked to furnish the pep music at the Weber State home games. He is currently organizing this pep band and is looking forward to a very successful season with the band. VERNE NIELSEN For Your New CONTACT LENSES 3225 Washington Blvd. Peace Corps Announces Spring Training Program The Peace Corps announced plans today for the largest spring training program in the agency's history. Volunteers scheduled for assignments in 18 nations will enter training at U.S. colleges and universities in February-March, said Peace Corps Director Sargent Shriver. An estimated 1,500 prospective Volunteers will participate in the training programs.In past years, only about 400 Volunteers have entered midyear training programs, Shriver said. While the peak in-put period will continue to be the summer months, he said this year's large spring group will fill urgent requests from countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Many of the spring group will be mid-year graduates of U.S. colleges and universities who will fill teaching assignments, most of which require college degrees. But about one-third of the spring trainees will not be required to have degrees. The spring training programs will prepare Volunteers for service in Somalia, - Malaysia, Nigeria, Ecuador, Nepal, Thailand, India, Jamaica, Togo, Colombia, Panama, Iran, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Venezuela, Tanganyika and the Dominican Republic.Teachers will be needed at all levels elementary, secondary and university and in all subjects, with particular emphasis on English, science and mathematics. Some physical education and vocational teachers will also be required. Peace Corps Volunteers serve for two years, including training. They get a modest living allowance designed to let them live at a level equal to that of the people with whom they work plus a $75 monthly readjustment allowance, paid at the end of their service.
