The growth, however, depends to a great extent upon the rate of nutrition, and during periods of sickness or abstinence ab-stinence it is retarded. It is understood to go on faster in uimmer than in winter, and differs for iifferent fingers, being most rapid in he middle finger and slowest in the .. humb, according to one investigator, '.nd in the little finger according to an- ither. The same two authorities differ, too, -vith regard to the equality of growth jn both hands, the former holding that he nails on the right hand grow faster han those on the left, but the latter an perceive no difference between hem. According to the rate of growth stated, the average time taken for each finger-nail to grow its full length is about four and a half months, and at iliis rate a man of seventy would have renewed his nails 1SG times.
