Show Another curious discovery concern, ing the atmosphere is recorded. A German chemist, H. Feudt, has noticed that when air is first heated its expansion ex-pansion deviates two per cent, from Gay Lussac's law at 400 degrees and three per cent, at 450 degrees, this anamalous expansion being shown onlj by atmospherio nitrogen, aud not bj oxygen, carbonic acid, chemically prepared pre-pared nitrogen, air previously heated, or air collected after rain. A sng gested explanation is that nitrogei must have an allotropic form, changed to the ordinary form of heat. Some interesting observations 01 hail have been reported to the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Oi April 30, 1S97, M. Czernick, near Ivan gorod, in Russian Polaud, noted twi falls of dilerent kiuds from nearlj opposite directions, the hail of omi being large pear-shaped grains containing con-taining a peculiar nucleus, while thai of the other was transparent granules of the shape of Battened ellipsoids. The dark particles of the former have j been found to consist of iron, with traces of nickel, cabalt and silicon. From the composition, "Professor Kar-pinsky Kar-pinsky concludes that the dust unquestionably un-questionably has a cosmic origin and reached our atmosphere from space. On an earlier occasion volcanic- dust from Vesuvius was found in hail col" looted by M. Czernik at the same spot. |
