Show Celebrate Golden Wedding Day 7TT " :: , v- - 1 ..... ,t - -;- MR. AND MRS. GEORGE W. WORTHEN With all of their nine living' children present to help them, Mr. and Mrs. George W. Wor-then Wor-then celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Tuesday, Tues-day, May 14 th at their home here in St. George and at the home Of Vernon Worthen, their son, the only one of their children child-ren to still live in this community. commun-ity. Approximately forty attended the dinner at the couples home and over 125 guests called to pay their respects at the reception recep-tion held in their honor at Vernon Ver-non Wlorthen's home between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. Beautiful decorations in keeping with the occassion were provided and many friends called to pay them honor and wish them the best of all good things for the future. ' In the evening the relatives held their family reunion and a short history of the family was given by Mrs. George Worthen and several original poems were read by the children in honor of their parents. Mr. Worthen, a patriarch in the St. George Stake, was born in Salt Lake City, January 10th, 1860, a son of Samuel and Sarah Worthen, early pioneers to Utah and also of St. George. . Mr. Worthen has led an eventful life having "ridden the mail" between be-tween here and Mesquite back in 1880 when it had to be taken on horseback. He also drove the temple carriage in 1881. He has been on two missions. The first to the Eastern states in 1886-88, and the second to the (Continued on page five) GOLDEN WEDDING (Continued from first nage) Western states in 1907-09. Mr. Worthen was in charge of the St. George water system for six years and of late years has followed fol-lowed the occupation of farming. He has been president of the Seventies, Councilor in the Mutual, Mu-tual, Patriarch since 1919 and has held the position of Sunday school teacher all of his life. Friends who know him state that he has always been a fine neighbor and worker in the Church of Latter Day Saints. As Patriarch he has fulfilled his duties faithfully and has always been willing to drop his work and go to the assistance of those who needed him. Mrs. Leonora Woodbury Worthen Wor-then was born in St. George, August 26th, 1866, daughter of Orin N. and Ann Cannon Woodbury, Wood-bury, pioneers of Utah in 1S47, and to St. George in 1S61. Mrs. Worthen has been an ordinance worker in the temple since 1926, councilor for fifteen years and secretary of the relief for twenty-one years. In addition to being be-ing a wonderful mother to her nine children she has been a real help mate to her husband, having had the responsibilities of the home left to her for four years while Mr. Worthen was in the mission fields. She is a graduate of the Dixie school' and taught for four years before her marriage. Their nine living children who attended the anniversary were: former Judge George W. Worthen, Wor-then, Jr., of Provo; Mrs. Leonora Leon-ora Gregerson, of Pintura; R'ow-ena R'ow-ena Slack, of Toquerville; Maida Nelson, of Rexburg, Idaho; Vernon Ver-non Worthen, St. George; Annie W. Ballard, Sarah . Lemmon, of Hurricane; Paul S. Worthen, of Minersville, and Lucile Peterson, of Cedar City. They also have twenty-seven grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. great-grandchild. Trips were made to the Boulder Boul-der Dam by members of the family. fam-ily. The first consisting of Mr. and Mrs. George Worthen, Jr., and son, Mr. and Mrs. George Worthen, Sr., and Maida Nelson, visited the dam on Monday. The second party consisting of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Peterson, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Worthen, and Mr. and Mrs. Afton Ballard made the trip on Wednesday. |
