Beatty and Kalph WhiPPle, was attempting )t w move a heavy safe from the recorder's room to the clerk's room Because of the fact that (i m safe was too large to go " through the door to the clerk's office, the men were attepting to load it on a truck backed up to the back door. According to Mr. Beatty, Mr. id . cottam 'had been lifting on a crow car and had nearly succeeded in getting the safe to a point on , the truck that it could be moved. P He had been working strendously and was hot. In making the effort that caused his death, Mr. I. Cottam lifted on the bar, dropped it and straightened up, -then took three steps backward and started e'" to fall Mr. Beatty caught him as ih' he was falling, and he says, eased f him to the floor and told one of the men to run and get a glass of water, which he attempted to give Mr. Cottam to drink and poured part of the water on his face thinking that he had fainted. Mr. Beatty states that when he gave Mr. Cottam the water, he tried to raise up. Seeing his condition, and realizing from the beat of his pulse that Mr. Cottam V.'i1 was in a serious condition, Mt. Beatty states that he urged that a doctor be called, which was ndh done, but by the time Dr. W. J-ac" J-ac" Reichmann arrived he was past v lielP- left ' Mr. Cottam had held the posi- tion of Sheriff of this county. i since July 193 4. He had been City Marshall for twelve years :j and deputy sheriff for six years, pi He was a director of the Utah Peace Officers association and was appointed s,tate prohibition officer offi-cer by former Governor George 'l H. Dern. He served as a city :i councilman for six years and as a road supervisor in this district ' when the state first took over r ' the care of the roads in this i section. That he consciously did liis duty and set a high standard is the belief of all those who have I come- in contact with him and his 1 , work. Since his return from the Hol-i'-f. land Mission In 1915 he had r.i been active in church, affairs, hav-; hav-; ing served as counselor to Bishop ! Frank Miles and to Bishop Karl N. Snow; as president Of the - j High Priest's Quorum, a member I , of the stake high council and a fci member of the stake M. I. A. board. U He was born in St. George, ' September 28, 1888, a son of Gerge T. and Rachel Cottam. He was active in school in St. George, and also at Provo where ""'" he went after finishing his edu-cation edu-cation here. He was married in ,lie St. George Temple to Miss J Maude McAllister and to this union the following children were bori1- all of whom survive: Mrs. Kathleen Riding of Pioche, Nev-il(la; Nev-il(la; Mason and Misses Grace, Agnes and Caroline Cottam of s- George.
